3m MW2 shipped in to satisfy UK demand

Fever-pitch hype for new shooter fuels unprecedented stock push

If you thought that the launch of Modern Warfare 2 today meant excitement behind the game will die down, think again.

MCV understands that Activision has shipped some 3m copies of the game into the UK to satisfy the huge level of demand for the game.

It's an unprecedented first-day ship number, and is enough to fully stock the thousands of stores open for midnight launch earlier today - and beyond.

Industry insiders reckon today's launch will break all sales records, beating GTAIV's five day UK record of over 900,000 units sold.

It's expected the remaining 1.5m units will keep the game highly-placed in stores in the run up to Christmas.

The game has been hugely hyped since being unveiled earlier in the year - last night it was officially launched via a Leicester Square 'premiere' and celebrity-packed launch party.

Reviews first published today and yesterday have also been highly complementary of Modern Warfare 2. The game currently has a Metacritic score of 96.

Seems excessive. Nearly 50% of current PS360 owners would need to buy it before they'd need a second shipment (I assume there won't be a ton of retail copies for PC).

For reference, World at War is between 600k and a million for both platforms. CoD4 is at 600k-1 million on PS3, 1 million+ on 360 both of which reached those levels in June/July 2009.

It's already £20 in Macros, £26 in Sainsbury's, £32 in ASDA, etc.

Don't need to wait to January - that's some above 50%+ discounts at multiple stores on day one. Gotta love the UK.

You do have to remember how awesome this is. I don't think there will be significant cuts, the game is that good, and word of mouth will convert anyone who didn't buy the first game
