Forums - Gaming - The vgchartz ranking game--Mirror's Edge!

All you have to do is put what score you think the game below deserves, and write a brief explanation as to why it deserves that score.

Voting is open for 3 days, after the 3 day period I will count up all the scores and get the average of the game.  I will be putting up a new thread with a new game every 3 days

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rules

1. You had to have played at least enough of the game to form an honest opinion about it

(playing it for 5 minutes is NOT enough time, nor is watching a friend play the game)

2. Users with less than 100 posts cannot score a game unless they back up their post with very good reasons as to why they rated it so.

3. scores have to be on a 10 point scale with 7 being average, and anything longer than 2 digits (Eg: 9.75) won't be counted.

4. If you score a game under a 5 or under, you have to go into great detail as to why you gave it such a low score.

5. A game must have at least 5 people that gave it a score to be counted.

6. If you score a game more than once none of your scores will count

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notice--Starting November I will only be having 2-3 game ranking threads a week, and scoring will stay open for 3 days.

(Because I'm moving somewhere that only has dial-up internet)

Funny choice of game.

Anyway, I'd say 8.5, just because the game is brilliant in some areas and in the gutter in others.

8,8

+ graphics, innovation (first person, flow, runner vision), levels design.
- too short, weak story, sometimes controls are imprecise.

8.2

+ graphics
+ gameplay
+ design

- short
- repetitive here and there
- story
- gun controls

7.1

+ graphics are good, innovative take on first person, fluid gameplay, unique and realistic melee

- way, way too short, some frustrating segments, somewhat weak gunplay, first person view is a limiting viewpoint for a platformer, very linear level design, crappy esurance cutscenes

9.5

Pros:

- Without a doubt the best first person platformer out there, with excellent and precise controls that lead a lot of room for player improvement. If you make a mistake, it was your fault 99% of the time (although a lot of people fail to realize this).
- Level design is superb, the city is gorgeous and has a great style to it.
- Nice focus on hand to hand combat, since Faith is just a frail, yet agile, woman.
- Time trials. :)
- The music!!!!

Cons:

- Too linear and scripted (lack of freedom).
- Bullet time doesn't last long enough.
- High difficult curve, the game is more fun once you master it, and less fun when you're simply average.

While there are those who would claim the game is too short, I disagree. The value in the game, for me, came from replaying it, trying new things, and mastering the controls. I got to the point where I could take out enemies one by one with deadly efficiency, make insane jump combinations, etc. Time trials, in particular, were a thrill (I am in the top ten for many of the levels).

In regards to the story, I love that as well. It is more political than most stories, and it's more about an underground resistance forming than saving the world. However, I will admit that the execution of the story was sub-par.

With all that said, I can understand why some people didn't like the game. DICE needed to encourage the player to try new things more often, to master the controls. Rather than hidden runner bags, they should've had runner bags that are only acquirable by performing a section of tough moves.

I didn't have a problem with the gunplay since it didn't make sense for Faith to pwn with guns, but I can still understand the complaints with it.

Mirror's Edge was one of my favorite games of the generation thus far. :)

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

8.5
I love DICE!

9.5

A game that provides an experience you wont get in any other game. Moving and running in Mirror's Edge feels much more real and natural than in any other game I've ever played, this alone made it exremely fun for me to play. And combined with great visual design and solid soundtrack Mirror's Edge is easily one of the best multiplatform games out there.

8.9
Everything is awesome, except for the story that is for no-brainers

7.5

+Can be very fun at times, as long as the controls allow you
+very original
+graphics unique

-story poorly told
-characters not well remembered
-repetitive
-short
-extreamely frustrated at times

Overall, I had a fun time playing Mirror's Edge. I think if the developer had 3-4 for months, they could've had more time to hammer out of the shortcomings that plague this game.
