Forums - Nintendo - Disapointed in lack of online co-op!

When NewSuperMarioBros:Wii was first announced I remember calling up one of my best friends and freaking out that we'd be playing this through from beginning to end online. After seeing the trailer I though for sure that it would be online co-op with WiiSpeak and of course friend codes. I actually believed it was going to have online support till only a few days ago, when I realized the horrible truth, I'm going to have to clean my house and have all my friends over for two or three days to beat the game co-op.

I also realized I'm going to have to buy 2 more controllers so that I can play 4 player co-op. I thought for sure that NewSuperMarioBros:Wii was going to be online. I remember reading Nintendo Power's article about Bonk having online co-op and thinking to myself how great its going to be to play Mario online co-op.

Am I the only one horribly dissapointed to see online co-op not a feature of NewSuperMarioBros:Wii. I'm sure I wasn't the only person who got hyped up after watching the E3 trailer and thinking online co-op was a given. You'd think Nintendo would put it online to get more usage out of its network and promote it as a true competitor with Live.

What are your thoughts, shouldn't NewSuperMarioBros:Wii have online co-op?

Uhm no online co-op is not needed, its hard enough playing games like LBP co-op most times, much less, levels designed to be much more difficult, fluid, and needing more precision to get through together. And on top of this on a system that has few adopters of its online chat system, making things even harder.

Wii Friend Code - 5882 9717 7391 0918 (PM me if you add me), PSN - MaxwellGT2000, XBL - BlkKniteCecil, MaxwellGT2000

The amount of precision required for 4 people doing these jumps at these speeds at the same time would mean any amount of lag absolutely kills the game. I've actually died on the first level of SMB1 while playing with a wireless 3rd party NES controller that had some lag.

It would have been cooler if it also had online co-op 'cuz that way I'd get to play with all you guys, but I'm more a fan of local co-op and would rather have friends and foes alike in the same room while we play.

Are me and this guy the only ones dissapointed for not online?

Online co-op wouldn't be online co-op. It would be an online grief-fest that would turn people off the game. If you want to play with friends, invite them round. 2D Mario has always been a local multiplayer game but in those days we had to take turns.

do you realize how hard it would be with online co-op? seriously you wouldn't know what this random dude online would do next lol, he will just fuck ya up all the time

It'd need wii speak if it had online that's for sure.

I am plenty happy with no online co-op. The resources that would have gone into implementing it went into areas of the game I will actually enjoy. Never did care for online co-op, and probably never will.

I'm gonna say one thing again, that nobody wants to hear, but is true.

Online automatically, when well implemented, slows the game's multiplayer momentum(save for a few exceptions like Mario Kart Wii which is helped by the addition of the Wii Wheel). Everybody who has the game can play the game online, and if the feature is good enough they often do. Even if it's just one person in the house that knows how to play online, they'll use that feature and probably dominate the game while doing so, or not play it any other way.

If you remove online, people gather. The person who was supposed to dominate the game by and ignore every other chance may invite family members, or even friends to join. If there was online, he would be able to play with others more easily, and as a result may not invite other people to play. Additionally, online enables him/her to play with other players who own both the system and the game.

That does not develop sales as much as bringing people who do not own the game. YIn your frustration, of not having an online feature you may reach out to a neighboor or a coleague, those people may not have the system and the game, and as a result of playing with you may buy it.

Local multiplayer exclusivity creates a social circle that envelops a growing popularity which online slows down significantly. This is how Wii Sports emerged, along with many classic multiplayer games. Those games would never have been as popular if they had online multiplayer. That's the business reasoning behind it, but also there are advantages to local multiplayer. There is an additional fun value to it, and plus it helps you connect with people closer to you, which for a lot of people is quite valuable.

Yes, I find it very dissapointing as well
