IW/Activision have killed PC gaming confirmed?

This decision was parallel to the IW/Activision decision.  Rather interesting.

Why do u need dedicated servers?

Whats the pros and cons?

I support John Carmack.

can someone explain a little more of the dedicated server/ not dedicated server pro and cons?

#1 In a dedicated server enviroment, no one gets advantages due to ping. When someone hosts a game peer-to-peer without dedicated servers, his ping is zero while everyone's pings are around 100ms. That means if you and the host fire at each other at the same time; he kills you first because your signal has to travel to his console/PC before your character fires, he fires immediatly.

#2 Peer-to-Peer systems are ALWAYS laggier than dedicated servers. Always! Check your connection, even if you have a fast 20mb download, that's not important, your upload is always something like 1 or 2 mb and that means all the people that connect to your system to play some CTF will lag because your upload speed is a bottleneck.

#3 Without dedicated servers, you cannot upload mods or user made maps for everyone to use. That means you eithier buy DLC or shut the fuck up if you want more content.

#4 If the host quits in P2P connection, the game ends and you must find a new room. With a dedicated server, it's like having someone host a game 24/7! Think of a dedicated server as an online 24/7 LAN center. You go there and play for a few hours and then leave and come back later and it's still there. Better yet, you get to become friends with the people there that also frequent the server. Over 50% of my steam flist are people I met on my favorite server.

#5 Since peer to peer communication is laggy, the player count is also lower. CoD went from 16v16 in MW1 to 9v9 in MW2. More players=more fun

If anyone has anything more to add or correct please do so.

Thanks for xplaining. Doesnt pretty much all PC shooters have dedicated servers? Nowadays I play only Enemy Territory Quake Wars and all the servers Iv played on are dedicated.

But can't they (id) offer 'official' servers anyway, which would be connected through the official match-making service?

I called it. I knew that if a big game like MW2 had removed dedicated servers, more developers would follow that decision. It's a good thing that MW2 is failing everywhere in sales.

Yeah, but what about Rage now? This game also has/had strong attention from the PC community.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Seems they're waiting how it goes for MW2, so MW2 must fail as hard as it can, for the future of PC gamers.

So you are saying IW's decision was known to id long enough in advance for id to create the infrastructure and coding necessary for this to work.  That it wasn't in id's game design the entire time?

Yeah. I have experienced that too many times in Gears Of War 2. Host has always upper hand. It really kills some of the fun.

#1 is true

#2 is not true. Depends on the dedicated server's distance. Latency is more important than bandwidth. Games don't send very large packets. The reason for the low player counts is more due to the cpu having to process large numbers of packets in a very short time.

#3 not true. Nothing about a matchmaking system precludes mods.

#4 Not true. Host migration occurs.

#5 is true

About #2, what I meant if we compare the two systems with equal distance of each other. Of course, if I connect to a server located in Inner Mongolia obvouisly it will be laggier if I connected to a host in my own country. However, both of us connecting to a single dedicated server in our own country usually brings better results on average than P2P.

#3 Can I run my own clan rules on IW.net? I haven't been up on the latest news but I heard things like no mods with a matchmaking system so I don't know :/

#4 I understand that's a recent development though, correct?

I can't think of a PC shooter WITHOUT dedicated server support...

But can't they (id) offer 'official' servers anyway, which would be connected through the official match-making service?

Left 4 Dead 1 had a hybrid system like that so I don't know why IW aren't just doing that?

PC gaming will revert to its 1990's dark ages if MW2 succeeds, 20 years of great progress only to be knocked off like a street mongrel.

Remember this day as it marks the end of PC gaming.. 11/10/09.
