@scoobes - fpscreator.com ... If an entire development tool to make modern day clones can be made for $50 that lets you design an entire FPS in a few hours, I'd say the process is simply streamlined. Also, as a game developer myself, our FPS is coming along nicely, we'll hit beta in late Spring. We started our company with an adventure game, but it required a lot more resources than our 7 member team could handle. With 7 people, our FPS has been moving along a smooth pace.

RPGS take a lot more to design, especially when constructing an arsenal of weapons that directly enhance existing character abilities (agility boosts, magic points, etc) As for GT, yes, the same could be said, that they are a one trick pony, for only making racing games.

Critical acclaim is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, the COD games are good, that's not the point I'm trying to contest. I'm saying that they seem to admit that they refuse to do anything but HD FPS games, where other studios will venture out and expand their IP base. Eventually, people get tired of rehashing the same type of game every 2 years, which endangers the developer's ability to survive without expanding and adapting.

Let's look into the future, when MW3 is made - what will make it stand out? New skins? Shinier graphics? What will make it stand out that MW1 or MW2 was unable to provide to it's customers? At least in sequels of an action/adventure game (God of War, Zelda, etc), the story changes somewhat, new characters and themes are introduced, and the abilities of the character are enhanced.

@ Nabraham - See the above for most of the answers to your questions. As for games that enjoyed similar success, both financially and popularity wise? Sure.... Half Life, Half Life 2, Quake 3 Arena, Quake 4, Doom 2, Doom 3, Bioshock, Unreal, Unreal Tournament.... I can go on for a while. As far as 3D game development is concerned, FPS games require the least effort and fewest resources.

But the fps field is one of the most crowded at the same time so it requires special skills to make your fps stand out in the crowd because so many are released every year and the competition is quite fierce.

This gen  Halo3, Gears 1, Gears 2, KZ2 among others were released. Yet most of the fanatics will only swear on CoD4 and at the time that game released the CoD franchise wasn't doing that great anymore...

I agree with your point, though Gears 2 is not an FPS.

Heh and the CoD franchise was fine as well, just there were some bad sales of poor ports and CoD3 which was made by Treyarch and not as fun as 1 or 2, if there isn't some fun to be had gamers won't buy it.  I know people will throw in a carnival game argument somewhere to counter this statement but it's simply fun just it might not be fun for you the gamer that comes online to talk about video games :P

Ofc that they don't bother, why would they. It's so much easier to increase poligon count and add a few extra effects while trying to immitate reality (no talent involved) instead of hiring talented and expensive designers who actually are good enough at making truly good looking graphics.

Oh so magically making game in higher resolution automatically mean it's going to look worse than SD graphic ?

I must say that's fascinating logic

You know Wii can do 480p so it's not that far off MW resolution

reminds me of Valve and PS3.

Because they know what platforms make the most sense for them to develop for?

I'm talking success on their level....Call of Duty 4 sold over 10 million copies alone....most FPS series don't even sell that much. They have absolutely 0 reason to branch out and try other genres when their current one is making them a ton of money. Its a company man, why would they take risks and branch out when the cash cow is staring them in the face?

Every animal dies eventually, even the cash cow. You have to prepare for a day when the series is milked to death. FPS games the smallest suppy of milk of them all - in other words, the game needs to evolve in order to keep player interest up. This is why Doom 3 was a FPS/horror where Doom 1 and 2 were not so much. With MW 1, it took the COD series to modern day, which was a first for the series. With MW2, they'll build on that, by MW3, the interest will wane unless they come up with another setting/location, or kick it into space or go retro to civil war days.  They have enough money to look into other directions and expand their studio's IP, but they seem to close themselves off to the idea. This stubbornness has caused studios to fade away in the past. To me, its simply watching history repeat itself. Who would have known that Origin would eventually fade away when the Wing Commander games were all the rage?

@Ail - I have no disagreements with what you wrote, agree totally. The majority of the work is done in the art area, which is ruled by modeling, which can easily be outsourced. The core of the development team is just tweaking existing code.

I don't get this statement from IW.

COD:WaW sold well on wii for a FPS. I think 1million+.

For a console starved of FPSers you would think they can at least get a wii team onboard and recuperate their salaries from the profits.

There have been lots of talk about wii being dirt cheap and dead easy to develope games for so what is the problem?

They claim to want to give a cinematic experience, there are two HD consoles to satisfy this need. Job done. Objective met.

How could giving the wii a release change this?

The accolades for GOTY and whatever gaming awards will be based on the HD console's version, not the wii's.

I don't get it.

It would be best for IW to have stated "We don't want to develope games for the wii because we don't want to. End of".

Whatever...They don't want to work harder...

I don't know if I agree with ripping on one company for sticking with one genre. That is a strategy that has worked for many companies. Take a concept, keep polishing and moving it along with each new technology advance. The original COD was a good game and the Infinity Ward CODs since have been pretty good games. I think Valve would agree with that the strategy works also. FPS's may be easier to design in some ways, but being easier to design doesn't mean the game will be good.

I give this thread a 9.6.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

"We like to be very equal across all platforms, and if it’s not equal then we won’t do it.”

So why bother with COD4 for Wii then? Oh right, it's named "Reflex", a totally different game.
