@scoobes - fpscreator.com ... If an entire development tool to make modern day clones can be made for $50 that lets you design an entire FPS in a few hours, I'd say the process is simply streamlined. Also, as a game developer myself, our FPS is coming along nicely, we'll hit beta in late Spring. We started our company with an adventure game, but it required a lot more resources than our 7 member team could handle. With 7 people, our FPS has been moving along a smooth pace.

RPGS take a lot more to design, especially when constructing an arsenal of weapons that directly enhance existing character abilities (agility boosts, magic points, etc) As for GT, yes, the same could be said, that they are a one trick pony, for only making racing games.

Critical acclaim is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, the COD games are good, that's not the point I'm trying to contest. I'm saying that they seem to admit that they refuse to do anything but HD FPS games, where other studios will venture out and expand their IP base. Eventually, people get tired of rehashing the same type of game every 2 years, which endangers the developer's ability to survive without expanding and adapting.

Let's look into the future, when MW3 is made - what will make it stand out? New skins? Shinier graphics? What will make it stand out that MW1 or MW2 was unable to provide to it's customers? At least in sequels of an action/adventure game (God of War, Zelda, etc), the story changes somewhat, new characters and themes are introduced, and the abilities of the character are enhanced.

@ Nabraham - See the above for most of the answers to your questions. As for games that enjoyed similar success, both financially and popularity wise? Sure.... Half Life, Half Life 2, Quake 3 Arena, Quake 4, Doom 2, Doom 3, Bioshock, Unreal, Unreal Tournament.... I can go on for a while. As far as 3D game development is concerned, FPS games require the least effort and fewest resources.

But the fps field is one of the most crowded at the same time so it requires special skills to make your fps stand out in the crowd because so many are released every year and the competition is quite fierce.

This gen  Halo3, Gears 1, Gears 2, KZ2 among others were released. Yet most of the fanatics will only swear on CoD4 and at the time that game released the CoD franchise wasn't doing that great anymore...

I agree with your point, though Gears 2 is not an FPS.

Heh and the CoD franchise was fine as well, just there were some bad sales of poor ports and CoD3 which was made by Treyarch and not as fun as 1 or 2, if there isn't some fun to be had gamers won't buy it.  I know people will throw in a carnival game argument somewhere to counter this statement but it's simply fun just it might not be fun for you the gamer that comes online to talk about video games :P
