ps3 is the best value in hardware, it is the worst value in fun. Blu ray has a poor selection of movies compared to dvd and the games available on ps3 are shitty or on 360 already. So yeah.

What does that have to do with the topic? Even though its clearly false.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

Well ps3 is not "the best value for your money Game console ever made" in most peoples minds because they can find MORE games they'd rather play on any other systems dating back till forever.  Not saying there are no games out right now, and it's value as a "Game console" will only rise as more games get released.  It is the best value hardware at the moment due to it being subsidized by sony, but not the best value "Game console" ever made (regardless of fanboyism).  He was just refuting what someone else stated as fact when it clearly isn't.

Also Blu ray does have a poor selection of movies compared to dvd.  Which is a fact.

So not sure what exactly you meant when you said "its clearly false" when it clearly isn't.

It relates to the topic because someone else made those points in a previous post stating that the games aren't selling because "Sony is the video game industry, and their is no arguing that" and that sony's marketing is letting down game sales.  He's just showing that is not really the case.  Which is on topic when/if you read it that way.  He did do it in a trolling way though.

Haha, Ah... Kbers blatant fanboy post made me forget what i was going to say... Sony IS the gaming industry and the PS3 is the best value... it's a decent value if your looking for both a vidoegame machine and a Blu-ray player... even then it might not be the "Best" value. (Which, not many people are.) Pure gaming value, not so much right now. That's like... the NES right now in my book. For the price of a Wii you can get the system and a crapload of entertaining games.

Oh yeah. MLB Power Pros probably wasn't expected to do much, I mean even I was going to overlook it at first with it's "Kiddie Backyard baseball" type graphics. Amusingly it's one of the sipmplest but deepest baseball games i've ever played, some of the statistical options are just sick, and it has a story mode!

Of course it has the same problems all MLB games have, basically being the best teams always find a way to choke in season mode. (The Redsocks are in last place in the division, the yankees are in third behind the bluejays. That can't be all on me being the orioles.)

I think the game was mostly made to make it's money in Japan. Maybe if people knew it was from what I believe is the longest running sports franchise in the gaming world it would get some respect. (SNES till today?!)

As harsh as it sounds, if Sony dissapeared it really wouldn't affect the market that greatly as things have become what they are. What few franchises are still married to it would either be cancelled or just easily ported. There would be a lot of sour gamers, but you know what, the same happened to Atari and the same happened to Sega, people will move on.

Also if your going for full value, the computer is by far the best gaming rig just because of how much crap you can do with it.

Combined with the fact that the computer is 99% backwords compatable with a MUCH larger backwords compatability library then the PS3.

I mean I can go to Office Max right now and buy a bunch of new games that got monster reviews a couple years ago. Those games are like 5 bucks each.

One of these days i have to get "Rise of Nations."

The problem when consoles like the PS3 try to become more like PCs is that closing the gap just further illustrates how much better the PC can do all those things that console is trying to bank on as its saving grace. The Xbox and 360 could get away with this because it was backed by one of the largest software giants on Earth. Sony's two biggest mistakes this generation were: 1. Pushing Blu-Ray on the PS3. 2. Trying to beat MS at their own game instead of just doing what had always made the Playstation a success.

Now as Sony bleeds, Nintendo and MS gobble up the franchises and developers that it is losing. It's really a deadly cycle that strengthen's Sony's competitors while weakening itself.

To sum it up, the Playstation is the best console ever made. Really.

DS says hi.

You jest?

Maybe at the end of it's lifespan, but ha, you must be kidding.

I would have to go with Montana with this one. No other handheld or console has released a holy trifecta like MGS/GT/FFVII within a year of each other. That singlehandedly changed gaming forever.

If you mentioned the NES as the best console ever, I might agree.

N64 says hi ! Super Mario 64 / Golden Eye / Ocarina of Time.

One of my concerns and theories about the glut of excess software this Xmas, is that many established "middle" titles will effectively flop. These are primarily titles with established brand names, and significant development budgets.

Since the holidays are coming, there is a real chance some of these titles could rebound.

But I'm going to focus on titles with sales figures that are available now:

--- EA titles ---

Madden (All): Although not even close to a flop, sales are down considerably from last year (approx 30%-40% from last calculation) - even when more platforms are added.

FIFA 08 (360): I doubt EA is happy with 80k sales on the 360 for the first 2 weeks. PS2 version faring better. PS3/Wii versions under this again.

FIFA '08 (PSP/DS): Both versions around 11k. Poor.

NBA Live '08 (All): The 360 has the best sales, still under 90k over 3 weeks. Not a great performance, and solidly beaten by Take-2's effort (200k).

Boogie (Wii): Under 130k isn't a complete disaster - but its not great either. Salvagable.

NHL '08 (PS3): 37k. Blah.

...I think that is enough for an initial analysis. Feel free to post other titles that have been missed.

The EA situation I have noticed as well when looking at their yearly financial reports. They are in a slow decline. Actually when they bought all the pro licenses (NFL, NBA, FIFA, etc.) it seems they have been on this trend. EA I think is going to have to reevaluate how they make games from now on because their yearly sports offerings are starting to wear people down I think. And I don't think they especially speak to the newer incoming audience as well.

Sports games used to come out every other year or so once upon a time. Or would have different companies making their own sports game with their own mechanics. You got something fresh and different and the purchase didn't seem as throwaway. EA has turned everything into a yearly 'buy and forget' escapade. You wouldn't BELIEVE how many EA sports cartridges & discs I used to see at pawn shops. Going back to the SNES/PS1 time period. They were bought and then sold and the same old year game sits in the shop month after month with no one even attempting to buy it.

Even when my local Rhino's became a Gamestop (I hate Gamestop!) when they were clearing out old game inventory of all systems going back to Genesis & NES (damn I miss Rhino's man ) it was always those sports titles that were last to go. NHL 94, Madden 02, NBA Live 98. Sports games have sadly become throwaway and the lack of competition in the field is actually hurting that area of gaming.

The arcadey vs. sim variety we used to have has basically disappeared and EA is riding a waning tide. They still talk glowingly about Tecmo Bowl but who will talk glowingly years from now about Madden 06?

EA will have to change and so will all of their copycats publishers.

That gave me a good laugh.

However, on topic. I think the massive amount of good games is one reason, another is that we are in year two of the new generation. I think that people who bought Madden or Need for Speed last year on their X360 don't want to buy the sequel now already, which automatically causes lower sales for the second-year sequels.

Also, you have to remember that those games came out not even a whole year ago on PS3 and Wii. The november releases of these consoles caused a shorter span between two games. This is an explanation for me why - for example - Tiger Woods 08 flopped heavily on the Wii compared to 07.

Another point is that the transition from last gen to current gen is still in progress. There are loads of people that play games but still only own a PS2, and they may already have 4 Maddens. This makes the chance that they are buying a new Madden smaller.

Last but not least, some games just get out of fashion now. I think Tony Hawk's and other skating games' time is over, although Skate had a decent debut.

I guess this quite sums it up. A lot of reasons, and every game on shams' list got affected by the one or the other.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)
