Forums - Sony - My PS3 just got the YLOD...

Did you try yelling at it.......my second ps2 failed on me and the J man started to yell at it because this was 3 weeks after he bought it.....next day he turned it on and it was working and its been almost 5 years since then and its hasnt acted up ONCE since then....it knows whos boss.

The thing with these consoles is that you have to show them whos boss......if they sense weakness they will fail....one of the great truths in video games.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

You can re-download any game you bought as often as you like, but you can only have it on 5 active PS3s at a time (you can activate or deactivate a console on PSN). Since your old PS3 died and you obviously can't deactivate it yourself, you can have it done by Sony (call them); I think all you need is your serial number and maybe your PSN username. In case you decide not to have it repaired you should really do this so the games installed on it won't count towards the limit.

About the HDD: Once a PS3 hdd is installed, it gets locked to the system using a unique encryption. If you remove a hdd from one PS3 and install it in another, you won't be able to access the contents; instead the PS3 will ask you if you want to format it.

I forgot to mention all of this...

I used the Youtube guide by Gilksy when my 60gb got the YLOD over the summer. It worked for about two months and the YLOD came back. I had to fix it every few weeks after that until the Slim came out. I would suggest you fix it and back up your entire HDD (Not just the saves as games like Street Fighter 4 won't let you transfer the save) to an external HDD and get a Slim.

@Mirson, yea Sony erases them. Before I chose another method to get my repair I called sony and talked to a CS rep for a good amount of time about it. She pretty much guaranteed me my HDD would be erased, regardless of whether or not the HDD had anything to do with the problem. I even told her at one point "it sounds like the techs erase them out of spite". She couldnt give me a real explanation as to why they do this, but for some retarded reason its a common practice for them.

They do it to protect your information. When my PS3 broke down the second time, Sony sent the box to the wrong house!!  Luckily, it was only the box. Imagine if it had my PS3 in there with the game saves, PSN login, etc. I would've been pissed.

I hate to hear that any system breaks. Look on youtube for a temporary fix. Maybe you can get it going long enough to trade it in at gamestop for a slim. That way whoever buys it next will have a warranty.
