This is like the only interesting thing in there, though probably quickly answered:
connection to the "real world". The game feels more like an own world if you recognize certain things that you know from the real world; and living in the desert where's absolutely nothing etc. simply is an easy and effective way to get an idea of what it's going on there.
It's a story-thing. Racism is only in the heads of the people who interpret it that way. It is in no way intended to be racist and most people will never ever think it's racist.
