Forums - Nintendo - Is The Legend of Zelda RACIST?

Is anybody starting to see some racist ideas here? The villian of the Legend of Zelda games is a black man, who comes from a poor region, and his entire race is a bunch of theives. Anybody with the slightest bit of common sense can see that this is extremely racist. Why did Nintendo choose to portray the blackrace in the Zelda series as being the thieves and the big bad villian.

This is like the only interesting thing in there, though probably quickly answered:

connection to the "real world". The game feels more like an own world if you recognize certain things that you know from the real world; and living in the desert where's absolutely nothing etc. simply is an easy and effective way to get an idea of what it's going on there.

It's a story-thing. Racism is only in the heads of the people who interpret it that way. It is in no way intended to be racist and most people will never ever think it's racist.

Around the Network

I always wondered why Ganon was associated with Moblins/pigs. It's a veiled insult!

a game only means what you take from it.

the only people who find racist undertones in games are the ones who look for it.

Well the article was clearly a joke, but I think your statement's a cop out. Can't you apply that statement to anything? In fact, I remember during the Obama campaign, there were people who had clearly racist posters and shrugged their shoulders when confronted, saying "I dunno".

i know it was a joke, i read this thread before i posted in it. but i think its true, i mean i've been playing the zelda games for a few years now and i never saw anything racist in it. but you do get people who will jump at the chance to find fault in anything.

maybe you could theoretically apply that statement to anything, but i'm specifically applying it to gaming, LoZ in particular.

also, this guy said the same thing so its clearly not just me who thinks that way..

Blah... I dont think anyone is being racist in zelda.. not unless u looking for that angle in particular. If you think zelda is racist.. what bout street fighter which stereotypes every race possible: the japanese karate guy/sumo guy, the indian yoga guy and the HK bruce lee lookalike..

anyway, i know it was a joke, but it is a thoughtful topic for conversation and we're entitled to have our say. :)

wow at people

it is not about his color !!!!!!!!!
it is about his color, his noze, his face, the place "his race" is living and the way they are living
He looks like a caricatural arab guy living in the desert and of course, he is a stealer !!!

and, I m not saying it is done in purpose. it is mostly an inconscious racism.

Aren't you the racist here? If I see a guy in the desert in a game then I don't think the real arabs are thieves.

"a guy"  ??????????: from the OP, it seems it is not "a guy" but a bunch of people like, let's say, a civilisation ...

YOU THINK THAT. You ARE A RACIST.

free claim

Seriously, watch that south park episode where Chef is complaining about South park's flag, they make a very good point there about racism.

interesting, do you have the name of the episode ?

Thats the most ridiculous idea i've ever heard

Those birds are actually my favorite part of Dumbo.  If anything, it makes all black people seem really cool.

I dont even understand how is it possible to link "crow" to "black people" ... but I clearly see where they come from in the OP
