why do we need a new OS every 4 years? Think Unix which has remained unchanged and stable for close to 30 years. I am not saying that every OS becomes like Unix. However why can't we have the same OS and then install features on top of it? And then you have to consider how every OS iteration means that the hardware becomes obsolete and you have to buy new hardware to support. Thats how M$ is ripping off a large number of consumers who only use their computers for home computing.

M$ is a for-profit corporation. Not a charity. They aren't in the freeware business. They are in the business of making money. If they release just one Windows OS and then keep upgrading that without asking anything in return, those profits off the sale of the OS are going to dry up eventually. There are ongoing costs associated with supporting a piece of software. That's why they gotta release a new OS every X amount of years. They're gonna have to get the funding from somewhere. Also apparently Microsoft's stock price has stagnated. If that is true, the shareholders are probably not very happy right now. Now is not a good time for Microsoft to feel charitable. All those heads at Microsoft might be filthy rich but its their responsibility to deliver a profit to their shareholders (I'm sure Bill Gates doesn't give a crap about his net worth. If Billy Boy was only in it for the money, he would have sold his shares in MS once it got hot and went off to a island paradise somewhere and enjoyed all his money up until retirement instead of working hard all those decades for the company.).
