Forums - Nintendo - Is the Wii bubble about to burst?

I have to say that these articles piss me off. In May these articles were saying that Nintendo was a threat to the industry because all 3rd party games were mini-games or half assed ports. Now they blame Nintendo for the crappy sales these 3rd parties had. What is next? Nintendo killed 3rd parties that did not develop Wii games.
If I was one of these self proclaimed specialists I would stop trying to look professional and just write:

FUCK YOU Nintendo. I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate you. Your console is gay and yours games are kiddy. I do not care if it sells well, I wont buy it.

Damnit people, buy Scarface Wii! If these PS2 ports don't sell well, what faith can third parties have in the Wii?

 Well said Mon.

Seriously, shouldn't talk of unsuccessful third party games wait until good third party games actually come out?

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I was going to comment on the article, but I noticed it was from Tech.co.uk

They have been predicting the Wii bubble burst since March, if I remember correctly.

The original article came from the Nikkei though.   Also, Wired did have a write up on it as well

Nope, its sales have still been higher than the compeition even without games, and with SMG and Wii fit coming the Wii sales are about to take off

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I could give you an answer, but at this point it is just beter to wait until Thursday - Japan time - (Wendsday in the USA) when Nintendo will issue it's quarterly results and (if necessary) revise its shipment forecasts for software and hardware (either up or down).

Here is how I look at it.  Unless Wii reaches like ~80 million units by Christmas 2009 (not likely), certain third parties are never going to see strong sales on Wii for at least another 18 months.  However, for those who recognize what the market wants, there is tremendous opportunity for growth.  Companies like Majesco, Atlus, Capcom, Square-Enix, and Ubi Soft are already seeing big benefits.  Sega, Namco, THQ and others are still deciding what to do, while companies like Take Two, Konami, EA, Midway, Eidos, Atari are essentially screwed in terms of reaping in money from Wii.

Off the top of my head, Wii has at least 6 games in the coming months for the Wii Sports/Wii Play crowd, Nintendo's hardcore Nintendo centric crowd, the 'PS2' casual gamers, and more generic gamers who simply likely variety (and therefore likely picked up a PS2 in ~2001-2003).  For the bubble to burst, Nintendo would have to fail those four markets simultaneously.  Nintendo may fail one or two of those demographics at one or two points in Wii's lifetime but Nintendo is too smart to fail all four all the time.  What developers seem to forget is that with the DS and PS2 sales slowed tremendously until big software arrived - at which point it was like throwing oil on a dull flame.  In some sense it is amazing how well Wii sold in Japan with just Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wario Ware, , Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Mario Party 8 and Dragon Quest Swords reaching over 10% of Wii users (i.e. games with sales over 360k).

Are we going to get one of these a month?

Would it be vgChartz if we didn't?  ^_^

LOL
Can I just ask this question? Third parties may not be doing so well on the Wii, but are they faring any better on the PS3 right now? It seems that the 360 is the only viable platform, but only in North America.

as well as this active thread...

Keep asking the question...I'm sure you'll get your answer.

And when you get it you will cry because the casuals have taken over and the non-gamers are all to blame for playing their non-games.

Either way it is a lose-lose for Wii supporters: either the Wii will fail or it will only win because teh casuals have stormed the hardcore castle.

I don't know why we bother to formulate replies anymore. What we've been saying since e3 '06 has come to pass and still you think we can't see the forest for the trees. Something has changed in the videogame paradigm. This is neither fad nor fashion...it's just fun.

WiiSports has changed lives. Brain Age and Nintendogs have as well. But don't worry...you will get to keep your hardcore market...it isn't going anywhere. The Wii will never have a Gears of War or a Halo 3. It will never have a Metal Gear Solid 4. But that won't stop it from becoming a dominant force this generation. If you can get to the point that you can understand that simple fact you will enjoy this generation a whole lot more.

Don't fear the Wii...it is not a threat to the hardcore crowd. It only helps to define the hardcore even more.

There is no doubt that the first party games are a major strength to Nintendo and they will do well. Of course they will sell systems. But what happens when "Joe" who has a Wii keeps hearing about this great game that is made by a 3rd party dev and is only on one or both of the other consoles with no plans to make it for the Wii since their first Wii game (which was for example a multi platform game) bombed while the other two consoles got solid sales?

It's just a different way to look at the situation and for the wii to truly dominate this gen (Which they have a great chance to do so with their record setting sales) they will need strong 3rd party support to turn even more gamers to their console. If either the Xbox or PS3 gets extremely great 3rd party games that the Wii doesn't go, it could change what people will buy for consoles in the years to come.

Any developer who's comparing sales on a multiplatform release and drawing conclusions on what platform they should focus on from that comparison is going to have a distorted view of the marketplace.

A multiplatform release makes compromises in design to accomodate the multiple platforms. One of those compromises will be controls, which will tend to gravitate to the lowest common denominator. They'll tend to use the same old analog thumbstick controls for all platforms. The Wii release gets a couple of tacked on gesture commands and a drop in graphical presentation to accommodate its weaker hardware. The result is a game that plays basically the same on all platforms, but looks better on anything but Wii.

Basically, I'm describing Madden.

The problem is that these multiplatform releases tend to fail to acknowledge and take advantage of Wii controls from the very start. The Wii is a departure in the gaming philosophy from other consoles, and few multiplatform games can deal with it.

If they want to know how well their games will do on Wii, they have to design the game with Wii in mind from an early stage, not just port it over and give it a graphics downgrade.

Pro Evo 2008 is an example of a multiplatform release which is respecting the differences of the Wii:
