Forums - Gaming - EA Dev: 'Game STORIES Are CRAP'! - (So he NEVER played MGS)?

I like his logic.

Because I write like crap, everyone writes like crap.

I quite liked the story of the very first metal gear solid and I still like the stories of the metroid and zelda franchise.

Well, I'll say this: stories in games are hardly interesting if you look at them as only one unit. As a whole, in franchises with many games like Zelda and Metroid, it becomes even more interesting because of the backstories involved with all of it.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

darth, pointing to MGS doesn't really disprove the point. i never played MGS so i'll just take your word that it's a great story but in general story telling in video games is pretty poor. plus, most games that do tell a good story don't really tell the story via gameplay, they tell it via cut scenes with isn't actually a video game, it's a video game movie break.

IGN said GTA4's story was "oscar level quality"

They were wrong, but they weren't absolutely completely wrong as the story was good!

Nowhere near "crap" or anything like that, the story accept was accomplished well.

@your bolded

I think Heavy Rain will change that......right CGI?

You said MGS4 story was so awesome.

You were wrong but not absolutely completely wrong as the story was alright.

I could go on, but honestly stop inflating MGS4. MGS > MGS4.

I mean how many times has a choice been taken out of your hands by a game to be done by the main character and you've thought "I'd never do that.  That's stupid!"

It would probably be easier to list the times you don't get railroaded into doing something asinine.

MGS4 did have pretty crappy story, it also took 10 hours of my life for which I have been mailing Kojima to pay me back. I'm looking at about $250 since that was my salary back then.

IT WAS a shitty and horrible movie with good gameplay, too bad it was mostly a shitty movie.

Half-Life 2 has done it best. You can't do everything but you are given a lot of freedom in the given area, and the tims when you can't act are because of other source so the feeling of being trapped is much stronger, the way video games should be.

What's with all the handwringing? A lot of games have great stories for the medium, they don't translate well to movies, but that doesn't make them crap stories.

Having said that I showed my Mother-in-law all the cutscenes in Uncharted like it was a movie and she really enjoyed watching it. OK the dialogue she thought was a little cheesy in places and a bit potty mouth (she is 70) but she enjoyed the story.

But hey, movies don't translate well into video games. And don't say Batman AA is a good example because AA is not a movie.

Movies REALLY do not translate well into books, and some books do not translate well into movies.

And surprise surprise there are crap movies out there that tell crap cheesy stories with crap scripting. Just like there are games with crap stories and crap scripting. Wow what a revelation.

Don't try to fit square pegs into round holes and we'll all be very happy.

I think Witcher has done it best personally, but that is based off a book. It mixes gameplay, great story telling and unique environment.

The withcer was absolutel great at telling a story. Not so much the player freedom, but the way you forged your character based on your decisions. The given themes weren't kiddie  material either, something I doubt will see the light of day on consoles soon (whther to let a girl get raped r not, for example).

I think it will be possible, but it most likely won't be the same since the company behind it is not that huge and would have to outsource it.

The decision to prevent a rape or not isn't a theme.

I'm sorry, deep sexism. Better?
