'The list'

I'm not going to go into the list like you wanted us to before, but I just think you should go back and play all those games, then make a 'list'.  I usually don't say this, but I don't see how you could make half those choices after playing the games.

Which I have played more than 3/4 that list and own half those games.

believe me, I've played them, all of them, I play ever game I buy (through junk stores, garage sales, flea markets, etc I've accumulated over 600 different nes games so I've played some obscure titles) for some time and everyone of those game I have played extensively because I like them,  the list is based on my opinions, which are going to be different than everyone elses, that is why it is a starting point, frankly I wouldn't be surprised if half or more of the list is different in the end

please give me your opinion on the best nes games, tell me how to modify the list, make it truely representative

also as atma said, which dragon warrior is better 3 or 4?

anyway atma your right, I'll pm a couple of the guys that are big on the nes and hopefully get some valuable input, though I haven't seen simon belmont or commando post in forever

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dragon Quest III:

-Worldwide top selling RPG of all time until FF7 (unless you include the original Pokemon)
-Japan passed a law banning the release of DQ games on weekdays as a result of this game
-It is highly rated, a direct port on GBC scored an 87% by western sites
-In Japan, a 2006 poll ranked it 3rd best game of all time, best of the series.
-It is the conclusion of the trilogy of games directly linked together, and is the adventure of the legendary hero spoken of in the first two games.
-Was the first DQ game to feature a full party and set all the major standards for the future
-Awesome monster arena stuff

Dragon Quest 4:
-Spawned off several side quest games Spanning SNES, PSX, PS2, and DS.
-Was very light hearted and fun
-Was my personal favourite until I played 5 just recently.
-Is one of the most accessible RPGs that doesn't have to do with Pokemon or Harvest Moon.
-In my opinion, anyone can play this one and love it.

Which is more deserving of a top 5 spot, DQ3, it was legendary. DQ4 needs to be high too.

Castlevania 3 was one of the best NES games ever, should also be top 5

River City Ransom should be top 10, it is soooo much fun!

Faxanadu is one of my personal favourites

Zelda 2 is surprisingly awesome (10 is an alright spot, I think it was 7 or 8 on my list a while back.

No list should be without Super Mario 3 as it's crown, that game is timeless.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Definitely hard to say.  Since they're both so different from each other.  Personally, from the NES versions, DQIV had better fine tuning of the overall Dragon Quest system, balance of gameplay and scope.  However, once their remakes were made, I think they're both equally great games.

So for the NES, I'd have to say Dragon Quest/Warrior IV is best.  But with the remakes, they're both equal.

Personally, my top 10 NES games would be:

1. The Legend of Zelda

2. Kirby's Adventure

3. Dragon Warrior IV

4. Dragon Warrior III

5. Super Mario Bros 3

6. Castlevania III

7. Dragon Warrior

8. Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt

9. Ninja Gaiden

10. Duck Tales 2

But this is just my personal list and I didn't want to impose this on yours.  It was just that a lot of those games on your list seemed like filler.  If those are the top 100 of the ones you've played, then sorry for thinking of them as such.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

thanks jumpin, so you'd put 3 over 4, gotcha,
lots of support for mario 3 at number 1 (you won't hear me complaining about it)
your right faxanadu is a great game, I'll bump off the indiana jones game (which is still good mind you) and I'll place it at 100 until we figure out where it belongs

Spot #1 belongs to SMB3 or Legend of Zelda.

Mach Rider (#35) shouldnt be on the list but rather Excitebike but not hat high therefore (more in the range of #70-80 imo).

Popeye, Q*Bert, Qix and Millipede shouldnt be on the list either (those are 2nd gen games ported to NES).

Rescue the Embassy Mission is still on #30 and #56. Btw I would put this game somewhere around #90-100 if we have to keep this game.

Jackal (#8) should be lower (somewhere around #50).

your opinion is exactly what I am looking for, I want to create a list that is fairly representative of the community.  My opinion was just a starting point it was never meant to be final

@atma I thought I fixed I'll drop the games that were meant to be dropped

I HAVE A DOUBLE DRAGON CAB IN MY KITCHEN!!!!!!

NOW A PUNISHER CAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also, atma I see your point about popeye, millipede and so forth, even though they are good games they are hold overs, but do you think we should extend it to donkey kong classics and mario bros?
anyone willing to second their removal?

I fixed the list, removed games and added games are correct now

Donkey Kong Classics is more than a port, it's a compilation of DK and DK Jr. so I think we could keep it. As for Mario Bros., well I really don't know... It's indeed a 2nd generation game, but at the same time it's a pretty good classic. SMB3 contains a version of Mario Bros as a mini-game. If some other users could give us their opinion on that it would be great.

don't worry I'm working on it
