Forums - Sales - Apple will OUTCASUAL Nintendo - Mark my words

@ avinash

Your denial is strong, so I've been forced to go through the trouble of hunting down Apple's sales numbers even though there's no convenient VGC for that market.

In their quarterly report in april of this year, Apple announced that 37 million iPhones and iPod touches had been shipped:

And at the end of September, Apple announced that it had sold 50 million iPhones and iPod touches. That's a difference of 13 million units, if you're keeping score:

So how were the sales of the DS in the same period?

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 26th Apr 2009 to 26th Sep 2009:

Console DS
Total
9,157,369

Somewhat slower, though these are sellthrough rather than shipped numbers. I expect you to go back to your lame excuse that the iPod touch and the iPhone are two different platforms while conveniently ignoring that the DSi has hardware capabilities that the DS Lite lacks.

If Apple comes in and takes a huge chunk of the game market, I think that would lead to some kind of partnership to fight them off, like Nintendo joining up with either Microsoft or Sony, neither of whom have any love for Apple either (especially Microsoft, lol).

Then lets see how bad Apple wants a slice of the game market and whether they're willing to pony up the hundreds of millions companies like Nintendo spend just on their game division.

One thing is for certain -- never underestimate Nintendo. Remember this generation when Nintendo was supposed to roll over for Sony in the handheld space and the crowing of the PSP as the new portable champion (hell screw Game Boy ... watch out iPod! PSP is coming!) was all but assured. Yet, Nintendo fought like a caged pitbull and ripped the PSP's jugular right out.

People who underestimate Nintendo simply aren't paying attention.

Apple has sold 20 million iPod Touch units as of September 2009.[5]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch

Iphones sold: 21.17 million (as of Q2 2009)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iphone

That's a lot less than 50 million ringo, like around 8-9 million less, so yeah, I think you need to recheck your figures

Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

My numbers come straight from Apple. Don't believe everything you read on wikipedia:

Try again.

Problem with that Ringo, is that most likely those are shipment numbers, so trusting Apple to give you the accurate numbers is not wise. Don't trust everything companies tell you, because they'll always try and spin it positive for themselves.

That's funny, because the numbers you cited in your last post were from Apple and you didn't have a problem, but I give you the latest numbers from apple and they're lies, all lies.

I wish NPD or somebody put out public tracking numbers so I could see how far your denial will reach.

Not denial, I just prefer to use actual financial earnings reports rather than PR announcements for my numbers.

Anyways I checked the last financial earnings report had a figure of 26.5 million iPhones shipped, and Apple was expected to ship around 7 million last quarter, although thats only an estimate, so its estimated that 33.5 million iPhones have shipped since 2007 and around 20 million iPod touches have shipped since 2007, so combining the two you an estimated 53.5 million units shipped since 2007.

Outcasual? is that even a word?
imma make one too!
Outcore

Sorry if I came down a little heavy on you. I get frustrated when I try to correct a factual error and my facts are dismissed out of hand.

I've been up front about Apple's numbers being shipped from the start, but I find the idea that Apple shipped four million more touchscreen devices than were sold to customers in a six month non-holiday period to be implausible. Whether and how Apple's handheld platform will impact Nintendo is up for debate, but the fact that Apple's install base is growing at a rate which rivals the DS is not.
