Forums - Gaming - Can Japanese games ever catch up?

The only thing japan needs to catch up with is sales. Japanese devs still make the best games around, imo.

^this. A lot of Japanese games tend to be better than the western ones. All they really need is a sales boost which means more advertising IMO

I perfectly agree with bugrimmar. But it all was inevitable since USA and Europe are far bigger countries than Japan.

I hardly know any Japanese games that anymore live up to Western standards apart from a few key franchises like Zelda, ICO and some Nintendo games. In the 80's Japan was very dominant with the Arcades.

and younger countries than japan due to massive inmigration.people forget this for some reason.japanese people are too old.

The west is only held to be ahead in the minds of the Western Core gamer, and in the minds of a few defeatists in Japan (mostly localized in Capcom). In the most objective guage we have, sales, Japanese franchises are still sales kings in most of their more dominant genres. Especially since you forgot one JRPG series that's stronger than FF: Pokemon

Though you have a point in that their unwillingness to really embrace the growth genres of the West like FPS and Sandbox may hinder them, but their old groups are still top dog otherwise.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Fallout 3, if you count multi-plat sales, is the best selling hd rpg. At over 4 million worldwide. I think Final Fantasy XIII will have no problem beating that number. Just simply because it's Final Fantasy. There was some discussion in a previous thread as to whether FFXIII would beat FFXII considering that many fans and critics are sick of jrpgs now. But I suppose it does make a difference that FFXIII will be the first one on the hd consoles. And the critics have shown to be shamelessly pro-Final Fantasy XII even though they were ripping on the genre since before FFXII. Though even if FFXIII beats FFXII, FFXIII will certainly not reach FFX levels given how much the jrpg fanbase has shrunk.

Now if we are going to talk Americas, then FFXIII doesn't have a chance in hell at #1 rpg sales over there. Oblivion, if you count multi-plat sales, narrowly beat FFX! That is huge. There is a changing of the guard in Americas for sure. Maybe FFXIII will win in Europe/Others but who knows. What we do know is that FFXIII will win worldwide solely because of Japan, which is pretty much like cheating (lol) when you consider how poorly the wrpgs have been selling there.

O RLY? So, that's why FFXII was one of the highest reviewed Final Fantasy games.

the ignorance is astounding!

I mean sometimes people just don't look do they

most people here say FF12 was TERRIBLE, bashed by fans & critics

but ergh, critics loved the thing!

I mean, FFXII had the same rating as FFVII and got higher reviews than FFVIII.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

FF XII rocked, combat reminded me of Dungeon Siege, just flashier. Western devs have really stepped up though, but havnt surpassed Japan yet.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Something that was interesting:

If I watched my library of games I have on PS One and compare it with games I have on PS3 I have way less J-games and more Western.

You should check it yourself.

That wasn't an opinion, it was a fact.

And if you're spamming, your post needs more FF13 pics.
