Why does modding your Wii in some way have to be all about pirating? The Wii's homebrew community is the best of all three consoles and they do plenty of things that one shouldn't think is morally wrong. At the very least, what's wrong with doing it just to get DVD playback on the console, or free homebrew games, or a new menu system, or an alternative browser, or running DOSBox from the Wii, or listen to the radio, or a number of other cool things and applications? Modding doesn't have to be about piracy.

The homebrew community would probably die without pirating.  No one would want to create things for a userbase that is so small is close to not existing.

Same for the R4, I think is pretty safe to say most are not bought with the intention of using great homebrew apps.

What does any of that have to do with the individual user? I see quite a few people here throwing their chins up at the thought of modding their console and others only equating it with piracy like the two don't have seperation. The bottom line is, you can mod your console for perfectly legitimate reasons, including various activities/applications that Nintendo could probably have added to the Wii with little effort at all and decided not to. In essence you're talking about the macro and I'm talking about the micro. Two different ways of looking at things, but this thread is most definitely about the individual user, not the homebrew community as a collective whole.

I'm original.

Mine is modified with a Wii Key chip.

Guess how many pirated games I have?.... none...I can't play games I haven't bought.

Hmm have no idea why I modified it in the first place.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

I don't have a beef with clean homebrewing. I'd be tempted to try it myself (die, region locks, die!) if I didn't have hundreds of dollars of downloaded games linked to my Wii. I'm just not willing to risk bricking 45 games along with my hardware.

Seriously? What is so bad about the HBC? HBC is the coolest thing ever, and if you don't have it, i'd say you have no chance of having a 'legit' wii. (I just downloaded it btw)

Not only that, but like RCT said, my Wii has been transported a shitton of miles, I have thousands of hours of play time on it (over 5000), I have 33 virtual console games (it is growing at a rapid rate), I have 100%ed nearly all of these virtual console games. I have a really strong collection of Wii games (it is nowhere near where it should be considering what is out though. check my collection in my profile.), I have played probably 40% of the Wii games out there at least once (and still have the save files.)

Not only that, but here is the kicker. I GOT IT THE SECOND IT CAME OUT. I waited in line for 22 hours, and I got it, literally, the second I was able to.

How could it be more legit than that? HBC is the icing on this magnificent Wii cake.

I own a launch day console that is unmodded.

I also own a Wii from March of 2007 that is specifically used for playing import games, so it has been modified.

Nice post.

My Wii is a Japanese system converted to a UK system.

I suggest a lot of the 'legit' owners check out homebrew. All that's required is an SD card. It opens the door to many good (legal) things:

unsigned code, DVD playback, region unlocking, system menu themes, linux and the always controversial backup loading(via disc or USB HDD).

Thanks for understanding my point.

I don't but my cousin's roomate does. It was kinda cool, he had hundreds of NES, SNES, and Genesis games at his disposal, but the tech was really unstable and the games either crashed or didn't work half the time. More trouble than it's worth for the most part.

I am proud to say that I have a legit Wii. As I type this I have people over who are playing Mario Kart Wii on it :). Great times as ALWAYS!!
