Forums - Sales - Biggest publishers of the 7th generation (all machines combined)

This is a list of the publishers that have sold the most on 7th generation machines. All the sales VGChartz has from these publishers, on X360, Ps3, PsP, DS and Wii, are counted. Note that VGChartz has some rather lacking PsP data, and that publishers that focus on this machine will be somewhat unfairly treated here. This data is, of course, not complete, but rather in the ballyard.

Publishers that are practically the same company are combined (Activision + Activision Blizzard, EA Sports + Electronic Arts, etc)

1. Nintendo: 424.57 million (31.8% of the total software sold this generation)

2. Electronic Arts: 161.54 million (12.1% of the total software sold this generation)

3. Activision-Blizzard: 117.31 million (8.8% of the total software sold)

4. Ubisoft: 99.5 million (7.4% of the total sold)

5. Sony Computer Entertainment: 61.7 million (4.6% of the total sold)

6. Capcom: 60.08 million (4.5% of the total sold)

7. Sega: 58.7 million (4.3% of the total sold)

8. THQ: 53.2 million (3.9% of the total sold

9. Microsoft: 52.5 million (3.8% of the total sold

10. Take Two Interactive: ~ 45 million (I had to go by the yearly page, if anyone can get a better number, that would be great)

11. Konami: 42.2 million (3.1% of the total sold)

12. Square Enix: 33.41 million (2.5% of the total sold

13. Namco Bandai - 33.12 million. (2.5% of the total sold)

These 13 companies add up to 89% of the total software sold, according to VGChartz.

Did I miss anyone larger than 2.5%?

I like these lists. Really gives a good view of the playing field. How many lists do you have left?

This is invisible text!

Another good thread, nice job. Nintendo's sales are ridiculously high. Also surprised that EA is above Activision, I thought they had switched places as the second biggest publisher.

So, 90 % of all software is sold by only 12 companies, leaving another 10 % to the other hundreds... Looks like a oligopoly.

Good list! I am surprised Squeenix is so low, but that will change once they start releasing games! And their purchase of Eidos will also help

Wow. I thought Nintendo would be on top, but 31.8% of all software sold this generation is absurdly impressive. Especially when that figure beats out the three biggest 3rd party publishers combined. Is this why third parties have been so cautious to support Nintendo even after the success of Wii and DS in building a large install base? Do they see Nintendo as too formidable an opponent on their own platforms?

Great thread. It'll be really interesting to see how these figures change after Q4. It'll be even more interesting to see where these companies stand in 5 years time.

Nice work Pineapple

I thought Capcom would be higher than Sony

The Blizzard part of Activision-Blizzard wouldn't be represented here.

I don't really have any "intended lists" plan. I make threads when I feel like doing some statistics, so it all depends on when I feel like it, really. I've done the biggest publishers on Wii and overall so far, I might do Ps3/X360 and DS too.

I could also do a biggest publishers for the year of 2009, but that would be a tad more difficult to make for the non-top10. I'll just put the top 10 here instead.

The percentages for 2009 aren't fully as impressive for Nintendo:

Nintendo: 22.3%

EA: 10.7%

Activision-Blizzard:  9.15%

Ubisoft: 6.4%

THQ: 5%

Capcom: 4%

Sony: 3.8%

SEGA: 3.6%

Square Enix: 3.2%

So the top 12 have just around 75% of the sales for 2009.  This number should get lower as the years go by, at least that's what happened in the 6th gen.
