I find it funny that some Nintendo fans are bragging about competing with the PS3, or hoping that the PS3 has lower numbers so that maybe the Wii tied the PS3 after a pricecut even though the PS3 had its own weeks ago and the Wii just had its.

How the mighty have fallen.

I approve 999% (PS3 Slim sales style) both the comment and the motivator!

Its like I said before, software sells consoles, not price and price cuts (In fact in Japan, new colors and hardware revisions might even be more effective than price cuts).  Price cuts only serve to make your money go further when buying a console you're already interested in, what Wii needs in Japan is the release of its winter lineup to get people interested, of course, since October and part of November is historically a slow month for Japan, Nintendo appears to be holding off until late November, December to release its big titles

Wrong.

When you get within a certain price range ($200-300 or less), price doesn't make as much of a difference. However, a price cut can definitely help spur sales. Saying that software sells consoles and not the price is a blatant lie. It's a combination of the two, and it's a matter of finding the sweet spot. That is, a company must decide which combination of factors provides the best value. If you really think that all the Wii needs is some software to boost it up, you must have missed Wii Sports Resort and Monster Hunter 3 (two games that were supposed to really boost Wii sales). What's Wii Fit Plus (or some other title) going to do to really boost up Wii sales?

I'm not saying you're totally wrong, but when you're actually making definitive statements like price cuts not selling consoles, you know you're become delusional.

THIS is why the Wii should not have had a price drop. PS3 was going to outsell the Wii either way, might as well weather the storm and wait until NSMB Wii to drive sales going into the holidays.

I am surprised by this. My only question is why are wii sales weak.

I'm not surprised at the Wii sales. I am surprised at how well the PS3 sales have held up since the PS3 Slims release. It looks like Sony may have finally righted the PS3 ship in Japan.

When real life says something different than your beliefs, then your beliefs are wrong Montana

We already saw Price cuts aren't the answer.

One, MH3 is a front loaded game, just like FF13 it won't keep sustaining sales, Wii did have a big boost from the game, but it was a one week thing, so yeah it won't do it.

Two, WSR and WF+, are sequels to very popular games, so you're going to see mostly repeat buyers not many new buyers, before the release of WF+ and WSR, Wii Fit and Wii sports both fell below 10K in Japan, basically they were at the tail end of their legs.

NSMB on the other hand is a totally different game than is available on the Wii at the moment, not including VC, and its the latest iteration of a 2D mario platformer, a very popular genre, look at NSMB DS, still selling even after all these years.

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Price has never had a major impact on the Wii's sales. It's all about software. First was Wii Sports. Next was Wii Fit. Wii Music and Wii Sports Resorts underperformed, but I don't think their next big title, New Super Mario Bros. will.

Wait until NSMB hits to jump to any conclusions over this.

Look at 360 last year.

Despite being a huge Nintendo and Wii fan, I'm actually somewhat glad to see PS3 best the Wii even after a Wii price drop, because it proves what I've been saying all along.. that it is SOFTWARE that primarilly drives sales, not price drops, bundles, or other non-game factors. Hopefully this will be the wakeup call nintendo needs to start pumping out greater amounts of quality software on a regular basis.

If they still don't do this, well then they deserve to lose to the PS3 in Japan.

The ps3 proves otherwise.

In the ps3's case, the software was there, but the price was an inhibiting factor.  Now the price is at an acceptible level (or more acceptable), and sales have improved remarkably as a result.

With the Wii, the reverse was always true.  The price was always at a reasonable level, and it sold gangbusters because it had the compelling software to do so.  However, the current lineup of software seems to be getting stale with consumers.  Dropping a mere $50 to $199 isn't going to change that.  NSMBW could.

As Montana said, it is a combination of price and software that sells console (and to a lesser extent name brand, which shows why the ps3 is besting the 360 atm).   You have to have compelling software, but you must also offer the console and software at a compelling price.
