Forums - Gaming - Why Do PS3 owners not buy exclusives

Thank you for your words of welcome.. I'm sure you weren't just buttering me up for your "Buy Uncharted & LBP" spiel. :p

Actually you may be on to something - I DID hate the Uncharted demo too! Felt like Tomb Raiding...

And as for LBP, I got the LBP 80-gig bundle (as it was the best price), traded in LBP the next day. I totally hated it.. sorry!!

I'm probably the one person on the internet who liked that demo, but it was still nothing compared to the game. You get a pair of relatively useless weapons, the worst story segment of the game, you don't see half the characters, you don't do any platforming at all, really, and it's just really linear and easy. Believe me, get the full game. You won't regret it.

As for not liking LBP...you have no soul. Actually, you probably just didn't give it a chance. For the first hour or so, many people despise it (and before you respond, makingmusic, don't). Let me guess- you played the first few levels, in The Gardens, and thought "wow, this is stupid and overly simple and kiddy", and I thought the same thing and didn't play it for another month. I didn't trade it in, though. Then I decided to keep playing, and it does get better. You should buy the Game of the Year edition when it releases in a couple of weeks, and give it another chance. Play all the way through, and try the community levels.

Killzone 2 is great, but it has quite a niche appeal- it's more hardcore, if you will, than CoD4. More difficult, more complicated. It's not for everyone. Same with inFamous, which really did have a terrible demo. If you are into sandbox/superhero games, ignore the suckiness of the demo (again, I liked it, but in terms of representing the game, it failed, like 99% of demos), and buy it.

Flower and WipEout HD are two great first party titles on the PSN. Flower may look retarded, but it isn't- at least, not in a bad way. It's a great experience. WipEout HD is a fantastic racer, with quite a bit of value, considering its price.

Then there's MGS4, but I'm not even going to try to convince you, because if you don't own it yet, you probably don't want to own it. I'll let Darth pester you to buy it until you finally give in.

Resistance: Fall of Man is a great FPS, but CoD4 and KZ2 are better. Both Ratchet and Clank games are brilliant (again, ignore the demo. I haven't played the ToD demo, though, I got it when I got my PS3).

And then later this year, get Uncharted 2 and R&C: A Crack in Time...or else.

And then later this year, get Uncharted 2 and R&C: A Crack in Time...or else.

I don't feel like going through this entire thread, but:

  • Uncharted* --I hated the Uncharted demo and wrote it off as a bad game for the longest time.  Luckily someone convinced me to give the game a try (and luckily someone else made me pick it back up a year later and actually finish it) since this has been my favorite PS3 game (counting non-exclusives).
  • LBP* -- I don't like LBP planet and I put some good effort into it.  It's not that it's bad, it's just once you get past the art style it isn't anything special.  The platforming was usually passable and sometimes even bordered on bad, I hated the SIXAXIS controls being on all the time, and just about every user created level I played was garbage.
  • Killzone 2* -- I hate hate hate *haaaaate* Killzone 2.  I admit, it has some of the best atmosphere I've ever seen in a game.  It does a wonderful job of making you feel like you're just in the middle of shit but the game itself ranged from horrible to bland and had two of the worst boss fights I've ever played (the one fighting the flying thing on the roof and the whole final boss sequence).  I tried the multiplayer and it just wasn't for me since I'm really not a multiplayer person.  Funny enough, most people say that if you didn't like the game it was because you couldn't get the controls-- I got the controls fine (though I didn't like how they handled cover), I just don't like the game.
  • Wipeout HD -- I started downloading the demo last week because someone got me to finally try it and I just phail at the PSN.  I still haven't been able to get it completely downloaded.  XD
  • Flower -- I want to try this, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
  • MGS4* -- I tried twice to get into that game and both times I got past the weapons dealer guy and I just couldn't take the game anymore.   It's not for me.
  • Resistance: Fall of Man* -- I was a little tough on this game in the beginning but after playing it completely through, it's not a horrible game.  It's a good throwback to classic FPS games and I can dig that.  That said, I still don't think it's exactly a good game and if it were released today, it would get completely lossed amongst all the better games.
  • Resistsance 2* -- This game took everything I liked about R:FoM and threw it out the window and replaced it with more things I don't like.  This game sucked.
  • Ratchet and Clank -- I tried it and for some reason it just didn't grow on me.  I might try it again one day, but not anytime soon.
  • Eye of Judgment* -- What a fucking terrible game.  The eye works if you're in the perfect area, kind of works if you're in a passable area, and flat out doesn't if you're in any kind of normal living room.  Also, this game couldn't be more unbalanced.  If you go first, you're probably going to win.
  • Motorstorm* -- Eh, came with my PS3, tried it, went back to Excite Truck.
  • Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm* -- I loved the actual fighting and the art style, I hated the God damn side quests it made you do to progress through the game.  This would have been a great game if it didn't make you do so many pointless redundant side quests.
  • Valkyria Chronicles* -- I bought this game and played the first few missions, enjoyed it, and then put it down (I have a bad habit of doing that, even with games I like).  I'll pick it up again one of these days.
  • Buzz -- I played this last weekend with a few people and I loved it!  My only complaint with it was that when doing the user generated questions the only game mode it did was fasted finger.  Sadly, as much as I liked the game, I'll never buy it.  I don't want to buy all the extra controllers and I rarely have enough people over to take advantage of it.
  • Folklore -- Tried the demo and didn't have any want at all to try this game.
  • Heavenly Sword -- Just didn't like this game, but I also don't like God of War.
  • Lair -- Ahahahaha, haha, ha, haaaaa...
  • Demon's Soul -- I'm actually pretty interested in this one, wish I had payed attention to it earlier.

I think that's all the PS3 exclusives I've played, put a * next to the ones I've actually bought.

When the generational shift happened, and Microsoft got almost every major and minor third party exclusive the PS2 had, it split the userbase. PS2 owners bought exclusives all the time, but now most of their favorites are multiplatform. Sony's own games were typically not very dominant on their own consoles(besides Gran Turismo), but it wasn't so noticeable since third parties bulked up the list of wanted exclusives. The reason most of Sony's replacement exclusives don't do quite so hot is because so many of them are "Me too!" titles, and were built to appeal to bringing in the Microsoft fanbase, not keeping their own.

I see it a little bit differently.  I see it as the lack of M$ having a first party, so they tried to snag up every game that made the Sony brand popular so they could say "Look, we have these games too! You can buy Xboxes now!". They took the easy route instead of investing in their first party.

Now Sony's games aren't replacements, but rather new gems. And what does M$ have? Games that the PS3 has also....

Putting all companies into perspective, Phil Harrison said it best 4 years ago, I believe:

"Nintendo relies too much on their first party, Microsoft relies too much on the third parties, but Sony has a great mix of both as to appeal to just about everyone" (Funny because Nintendo is the one supposedly appealing to everyone nowadays, but you catch the drift)

My point was that the games most defining of the Playstation brand were not owned or operated by Sony themselves, so once they stopped being exclusives, Sony lost a chunk of it's identity as it's console and the Xbox 360 started to look remarkably similar. The reasons for this happening, whether it be rising developments costs or conspiracy plots involving big bags of money, are irrelevant. The point is why their first party titles haven't plugged in the gap, and I gave my explanation. If this topic were about Microsoft, I would take this from their perspective.

Microsoft's original strategy had very little to do with matching the PS2's strategy. It consisted more with bringing a PC-like experience to a console and generally continue following Sega's lead. Microsoft really didn't employ a Me too approach until they created Forza Motorsport. That was understandable though. Sony's strategy worked and Gran Turismo was the flagship along with GTA, which they only needed to cut the exclusivity agreement. Microsoft was smart to employ a Me too approach because they were tapping into 120 million PS2 owners' wants. Sony was tapping into a 23 million fanbase by appealing to Microsoft's audience.

Now coming into the PS3, Sony looked away from their own success and looked towards what was working on the Xbox and Xbox 360. Sony had not locked their previous fanbase into a FPS loving audience the way the Microsoft fanbase had, so running your console launch around an unproven FPS (when you already have a franchise in place to top it off) was a sign that Sony understood their competitions' fanbase better than their own. Resistance ended up selling because of a general lack of software, but it's sequel pointed out to everyone that very many were not left with a good enough taste to come back. Where was the strong Japanese developed lineup? Where were the RPGs? Now Sony is two FPS deep and almost everything they come out with has online multiplayer nowadays. That was Microsoft's original strategy. Look at the title's that were Me toos to Sony's own first party titles. Motorstorm was ATV Off Road Fury. Heavenly Sword was God of War. These were all in the first year, when the only real known franchise from Sony still coming in was Ratchet and Clank.

Now look at some successful franchises Sony had on the PS2 and their status:

1. Gran Turismo-Took way too long to come out. Still looking at a May-June 2010 release for western shores and March for Japan.
2. EyeToy series-Sony came out with a replacement for the PS3, created one total retail game that came packaged and was ridiculously niche in nature, and then completely abandoned it.
3. SOCOM-Sony handed it off to a different developer, cut features and the game came out in absolute ruins.
4. God of War-Finally coming out in March.

@Twesterm: To be specific, all the three games mentioned would be games "for wrong audience" on any platform.

Eh, you could make the argument that LBP might have a better place on the 360 instead of the PS3 since it had Viva Pinata but ultimately such a casual game like LBP with that kind of art style would have done by far the best on the Wii.

As for No More Heroes and Madworld, while I love playing them on the Wii, I would be willing to bet the majority of the people that bought those also had a PS3 and/or a 360 and there were a good number of PS3/360 owners that would have loved to play it but didn't have a Wii.

Well,LBP  is not possible on the Wii because of its specs limitations

@blackops: Or maybe Twesterm is giving his opinion on the specific games. Though, he's a huge fan of the Ghostbusters game on PS360.

And, what might be the technical limitation on Wii that prevents LBP being possible on it?

I won't make the list here because I don't want to derail the thread, but sure, I'll make one for the 360 exclusives I've played and message you.  Also, please do not call people fanboys.

1. Most people use PS3 as a Blu Ray player.

2. The price hindered the attach rate.

3. Sony rely too much on brand loyalty. They're stepping their game up, though.

4. MGS4 sold very well. Killzone 2 sold all right. LittleBigPlanet sold over 2 million, which is pretty good.

Most people use the PS3 as a blu-ray player? 'most people' you beleave that? haahahhaahahaha

Ok, then what if I said "a lot"? Will that make you happy?
