I read in some thread that some people believed that the PS3 would close the gap to 5-6m after the holidays. Which, if it came true, made me think about how this would affect the console wars and how the fanboys would tear up this forum with 360 is doomed, PS3 to claim 2nd place, wait for Natal, new pricecut threads. And it also made me think about the end of this generation and the begining of next. And i cant see how this generation of console wars between the 2nd and 3rd place will ever be decided if previous predictions came true and the PS3 went to close the gap and maybe get it down below 5m.

Here's what i mean.

If this generation was to close while the 360 still had a 4m lead over the PS3. Would the 360 be the winner over PS3, or would the PS3 be the winner over 360 since it closed the gap that the 360 gained during its solo year on the market?

One side will argue that 3rd place is 3rd place because the 360 sold more consoles, end of story. While the other side will argue that since the PS3 managed to close the gap that the 360 gained prior to the PS3 and Wii being released on the market, and more. That they're the rightful owners of 2nd place and that they had the "more successful console".

What's your take on it?

(And yeah i know the Wii is in the race aswell. But for this topic its irrelevant.)

Technically the console war has been over for years. Wii has obviously won. PS3 and 360 are just more fun to discuss.

Xbox 360 is foe beta users wii is for everyone who likes gimmicks & PS3 is for the Gamer who wants to experience the full gaming experience.Then again PC>Consoles

If PS3 finishes with more sales than the 360 finishes, PS3 comes second.

I think thats what you are asking...

for that reason i will vote the opposite, even if Sony comes 3rd place they win this generation because you learn from mistakes.

See what I did there? I made something irrelevant sound relevant.. if Sony was to end 2nd place they would be 2nd place, same thing with 1st and 3rd place and whatever console you choose..

In the end I think the Xbox 360s year earlier release should be overlooked and only the total console sales matter, for now I think thats not the case and PS3 is selling ALOT better then Xbox 360 (same consoles in less time) and therefore is NOT even close to being a failure or a definete loser..

Console wars FTW. My money is on the PS3 taking second place ahead of the XBox 360. PS3 is now at a very cheap price and teh PS3 sales have huge momentum which will help it overtake the 360 in total sales within months. New PS3 exclusive games will all be huge PS3 console sellers.

I hope the PS3 will win the console sales war and make it three straight console generation wins for Sony.

@Carl Yeah that's how I thougt it worked too.

If X360 sells more consoles than PS3 then of course it got 2nd place.

But that won't happen.

Before the next gen starts the PS3 will have passed the X360 in sales and this discussion wont be needed.
(and even if the PS3 only passes the X360 after the Xbox 3 has launched, then it will still be counted as 2nd place of course)
