Fighting games still have basically the same old-fashioned game-mechanic of the 80's Arcades. It's a primitive genre, and there's not much you can do in fighting games xcept for smash buttons. I find them boring. It's a genre that will slowly keep fading and eventually vanish.

Quite an arrogant post there.A true gamer knows there is skilled required in every game genre.

I didnt question the skills.

Even Tetris requires skills, but it's still true that Tetris is a primitive game where only buttons will be smashed.

Buttons are smashed in every single game. Do you REALLY think that each input is mindless and will garner the same result?

I would love to see more beat 'em ups I was very impressed with "the warriors" it was really fun game and it even had an old style side scrolling beat 'em up as a bonus when you finished the game.

Fighting games are still good like tekken 6 & street fighter 4 it's a genre you can't innovate much and easily.

Sure it does. The fighting mechanic is almost the same as in the beginning of the genre, only the graphics are getting better and now there´s online. There´s no room to further improve fighting games.

What makes you thinking those games need improvement in mechanics or that fanbase of them wants any changes ? The only thing that needs improvement is getting as lag free online experience as technically possible.

I´m a figthing games fan as far as i remember and i do think we need some improvements here, otherwise the genre will become less relevant in future. Main problem is fighing games have reached their peak and can not be improved no more.

Thats not what Im saying. By saying that something is primitive or simple I never implied it's 'mindless'.

The next step in fighting games is NATAL.

I think the fighting genre is in the middle of a 'revival' atm. If you consider revival being a renewed interest by companies in making fighters once again.

However, what I think needs to be done and what you might have meant GameOhaLLA is that the fighting genre needs some new innovation or original title to draw new people into the genre and increase sales. Like Street Fighter did on the SNES/Genesis, Tekken did on the PSX, Soul Calibur did on the Dreamcast and Smash Bros did on the N64/GC.

My big hope for this was actually the DS. I felt the platform was perfect for the fighting genre. And early on, we got a really unique and fun fighter (Jump Super Stars). However, the title was too centered on the Japanese market, so it couldn't open up a whole new avenue of playstyles and unique gameplay for fighters elsewhere. And fighters for the most part this gen have restricted themselves to simply being sequels of their predecessors on the 'HD' machines. Claiming 'High Definition' was the new path to innovation, not any improvements to gameplay or altering the games structure.

Hopefully down the road we'll see a new and innovative fighter. Something that can be put up against the innovative titles of the past, and not just simply labeled 'Crazy Graphics Fighter XX Alpha 4 # Reload Super Turbo'.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I've been a real big fan of the fighting genre of games ever since i was a young kid. With games like Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat the fighting genre was it for me. But in recent years most people lean toward the RPG and Shooter genre way more than Fighting and fighter tend to sell less and seem less significant than an RPG or Shooter. Why do you think this is? Is it cause the fighting genre lost its fire or does it seem to suck more now. I for sure think its still great judging by Soul Calibur 4 and SF4. Give me your take on this plz

What else can be done with the genre?  The genre has been close to perfected.  Unless you are talking simulations, along the lines of mixed martial arts and boxing, it is pretty much is nailed down.  Do expect to see fighting genre be morphed and changed some, and absorbed by other genres though.

Let's check; the fighting genre.

7th gen Fighting genre vs 6th gen fighting genre. (I'm splitting it up as that will make it easier for future conclusions, not to prove that the Nintendo consoles (for instance) are doomed in fighting).

Machines - 6th gen - 7th gen - difference

Nintendo consoles: 11.25M - 13.75

Sony consoles: 55.39M - 9M

Microsoft consoles: 5.9M - 10.9M

Handhelds: 0.14M - 15M

Total: 72.68M - 48.65M

For consoles only: 72.54M - 33.65M

Last gen, there were sold ~ 1.7B games on consoles. This gen we're at 750M so far. In other words: There have been sold 46% as many fighting games on consoles as last gen, and 44% as much total software. Compared to other genres, the fighting genre is selling dead on the same as last gen.

As for Fighting vs RPG, it's at

Machines - Fighting - RPG - difference

Wii - 13.75 - 5.06M

Ps3 - 9M - 5M

X360 - 10.9M - 19.89M

Total consoles: 33.5M vs 30M.

Handhelds:

DS - 4.5M - 66.38M

PsP - 10.5M - 18.05M

Total all machines: 48.5M vs 85M.

The RPG genre is definitely larger than the fighting genre all around. On consoles alone, they're equal.

This is why I like VGChartz. smart gamers. Great way of explaining it. Thanks bro.
