I think the fighting genre is in the middle of a 'revival' atm. If you consider revival being a renewed interest by companies in making fighters once again.
However, what I think needs to be done and what you might have meant GameOhaLLA is that the fighting genre needs some new innovation or original title to draw new people into the genre and increase sales. Like Street Fighter did on the SNES/Genesis, Tekken did on the PSX, Soul Calibur did on the Dreamcast and Smash Bros did on the N64/GC.
My big hope for this was actually the DS. I felt the platform was perfect for the fighting genre. And early on, we got a really unique and fun fighter (Jump Super Stars). However, the title was too centered on the Japanese market, so it couldn't open up a whole new avenue of playstyles and unique gameplay for fighters elsewhere. And fighters for the most part this gen have restricted themselves to simply being sequels of their predecessors on the 'HD' machines. Claiming 'High Definition' was the new path to innovation, not any improvements to gameplay or altering the games structure.
Hopefully down the road we'll see a new and innovative fighter. Something that can be put up against the innovative titles of the past, and not just simply labeled 'Crazy Graphics Fighter XX Alpha 4 # Reload Super Turbo'.
