Square-Enix Head Says Wii 2 in 2011
The CEO of the company that makes Final Fantasy believes Nintendo's next console will be more like 360 and PS3.
by Matt Casamassina

US, September 21, 2009 - According to a report by the Financial Times, Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada believes that the successor to Nintendo's incredibly popular Wii videogame console will arrive in 2011. The Times is vague on details with regard to Wii 2, but paraphrases Wada as saying it should debut with "functionality more like that of Microsoft's Xbox 360 or Sony's PlayStation 3, and possibly a different controller."

If Wada is referring to more powerful hardware and the ability to output high-definition graphics, he's right. In a June 2009 interview with Venture Beat, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that the successor to Wii would embrace the new HD age. "If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world."

Nintendo's Wii system debuted in November of 2006, which means that a 2011 release for Wii 2 would allow the console a traditional five-year life cycle. Sony's leaders have stated that they believe PlayStation 3 will enjoy a much longer life cycle. Could the same happen for Wii, which continues to outsell its competitors on a monthly basis? That all depends on whether or not Wii can continue to support innovative ideas that sell.

"As we continue our research and study for new hardware, when we will be able to launch a new kind of hardware will actually depend on when we can change entertainment completely, and so have a strong impact on people around the world," Iwata said during a financial briefing two years ago "Or, there will certainly be a time when we have to say that we have done everything possible with the current machine, that we can never propose anything new."

Wada is speculating for S-E investors, investors who probably want more Wii games, Nintendo won't launch first next gen, they haven't since the NES, in addition the earliest they can announce it is E3 2011, so that will mean late 2012 at the earliest for a launch

Not true at all. Remember the Wii itself, announced in a rare visit to the Tokyo game show, (though announced as the revolution), and launched a little under 14 months later (though it fairly felt like an eternity, i can tell you)

Wrong, that was the controller, the console was announced at E3 2005 (in fact it was first talked of at E3 2004, so that would mean 2012-2013 if the same pattern applies), they just didn't show off the controller until TGS

first S-E 2011 prediction of new nintendo console in 2011 and now this from Suda51.

It may appear like Nintendo is working closely with 3rd party developers so they can have an awesome launch. It will be interesting times.

Or it may be just devs guessing, Nintendo already made it clear that they are working on a new console, they always do after the previous one launches, and people assume that Nintendo works on a 5 year cycle, so people are assuming 2011, however Nintendo already said they expect this gen to be longer, not to mention they are making huge sales and profits on the Wii, so releasing a successor in 2011, would be silly, not to mention Nintendo doesn't launch first, not since the NES, so 2011 seems unlikely, maybe 2012

Interesting conversation.

I had a feeling thats what he meant. Its good that hes showing confidence and loyalty in Nintendos strategy.

However, on the flipside, too bad that his game won't be going to other platforms for more exposure. Its a good game, good concept and story.

So, what will he be doing if the Wii doesn't come out for a few years....

Take a few years making the third game incredible :D The first was great but could have used more time for polish.

On what dev kits?

The dev kits Nintendo will give him.

It's not like devs finally get dev kits once a system is released...

He could always make other games besides NMH while waiting to get a dev kit.

Of course, but dev kits don't get out too early. I know Sony's didn't come until like early 2006.

Nintendo isn't going to be handing out Dev kits anytime soon, they probably haven't even finalized the new control features of their next console

Do you ever stop trolling?

Seriously, stop wasting your time here and play a game like...Baten Kaitos Origins.

Why did you pick me to comment on? Maybe you should have called those few people before me posting stuff like "Now all the fanboys around the internet who were erect with the idea of NMH on their HD boxes are gonna start downplaying the game again. lol" and so on.

Is it trolling because you don't happen to like what I said?

No, you just called me a troll because you don't like what I said.
