yes to both, much as i loved my PS2, this generation has more great games and super consoles.

Just because they set the standard of yesteryear doesn't mean that the standard hasn't moved forward. So yes, I would say that this is about the best generation except for those who like timeless games like JRPGs which haven't changed much substantially in years. |
That's like saying 'this gen is better because it has more advancements'. But you are overlooking many factors, such as the ratio of good games to bad, the amount of 'fun' games and frankly, the sheer factor of console war crap getting in the way of third parties making better games (and fans buying games).
Also your last comment hints towards a rather bias statement. The same could be said towards any genre if you don't like how it has gone this gen.
PS1/N64/Saturn is the best, then SNES/Genesis, then the DC/PS2/XB/GC, and then even the NES era was very good with simplistic but great games to play. This one is not a bad gen but is has a lot to prove yet, besides it seems that the better games are not being bought, the mediocre/bad games are being somewhat good in sales, which is sad. Seems to me that the videogame industry is now suffering from the same virus that affects the film industry nowadays

I'd say this gen is the most important to the future of gaming since the third generation (NES/Master system)
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Im willing to bet the ratio of good / bad, fun / not fun is pretty high up thereand especially so for the HD consoles compared to the previous generation. See PS2 vs PS3 if you want. HL 1 isn't as good as HL 2 and yet both are considered masterpieces. Valve and other developers learnt between one game and the next and the standards and quality rose.
Tease.

As for how long? i dont know i hope its long though because all us gamers have spent way to much money to let it go all to waste so soon. |
No sega console? Aren't you supposed to be like 13?

i'll have my feedback on this once FFXIII releases
Hard to say. I really like this one a lot, and I have yet to go beyond the DSWii combo. DS FF remmakes and Wii VC have certainly added a lot for me, along with Layton, Phoenix Wright, health games, and more. Last generation seemed kind of weak, all I had was a PS2 and over half of what I played were PSX games.
The previous generation, if you tag on Dreamcast, was my favourite. While it started off weak in 94, the SNES started having classics pumped onto it including DKC 1-3, Kirby Superstar, FF6, Earthbound, Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound (I even got the version released with one of the giant pamphlet manuals), and more; these games weren't really 16-bit games anymore even though they ran on that hardware, they were the start of the pre-rendered 24-bit graphics era which was huge on PSX. Meanwhile we got Resident Evil. The transition kind of occurred around Harvest Moon (SNES), GE007 (007) and Wild Arms (PSX) where I started to actually play the systems of the generation more.
The end of it I see as being when Skies of Arcadia was released. It was the end of a Golden Era. Luckily, Skies of Arcadia turned out to be one of the greatest experiences a gamer could have. Final Fantasy 10 was well done, but it lacked the open freedom of Skies of Arcadia, there was much less to do, much less to explore at will. Final Fantasy 12 managed to have a huge world, but it was a game about grinding and there were large gaps of nothingness that didn't need to be there. Last generation was the first time I felt games had peaked.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
To paraphrase Dickens......
It was the best of gens
- Stunning high quality games everywhere.
It was the worst of gens
- Chronic reliability problems from the HD consoles.
