If you took many top selling games from previous generations, spruced them up visually and kept the game-play the same, you would find that the games from 1998 do not hold up well to today's standards. Just because they set the standard of yesteryear doesn't mean that the standard hasn't moved forward.

So yes, I would say that this is about the best generation except for those who like timeless games like JRPGs which haven't changed much substantially in years.

That's like saying 'this gen is better because it has more advancements'.  But you are overlooking many factors, such as the ratio of good games to bad, the amount of 'fun' games and frankly, the sheer factor of console war crap getting in the way of third parties making better games (and fans buying games).

Also your last comment hints towards a rather bias statement.  The same could be said towards any genre if you don't like how it has gone this gen.

Im willing to bet the ratio of good / bad, fun / not fun is pretty high up thereand especially so for the HD consoles compared to the previous generation. See PS2 vs PS3 if you want. HL 1 isn't as good as HL 2 and yet both are considered masterpieces. Valve and other developers learnt between one game and the next and the standards and quality rose.
