If it gets the right marketting, and publicity... It will sell well.
"Life is but a gentle death. Fate is but a sickness that results in extinction and in the midst of all the uncertainty, lies resolve."
I've been interested in seeing where they were going with Heavy Rain. The concept sounds great, but I am not behind the control implementation. I HATE quicktime events. I hate 'em. HATE HATE HATE them. Unfortunately, I think that developers come to the point where they either have to come up with a more innovative way of handling an event for which they only want a few well defined outcomes or they just go with the button matching. For a game like this, they are going for telling a story and trying to immerse you with other aspects of the control scheme and story progression. The quicktime events will keep me away, but I like seeing companies experiment.
I give this thread a 9.8.

First Impressions
Although we've already clocked up some time with the game, we feel we've only just scratched the surface with Heavy Rain trying to bridge the gap between video games and movies with a strong focus on the story rather than the action.
It's like the Shenmue of the new decade and promises to be a game that, although you could breeze through in around 15 hours, should with the hundreds of possibilities, have you coming back for more. The danger, is that it's unlikely to appeal to the hardcore gaming masses looking for a quick fix after work or the pub.
It can also be a little disturbing as the level of realism is sometimes a little eerie. This isn't an escapist fantasy and at times, it's a little too close to home. The atmosphere and tension is incredible, a stark contrast to what at times could be taken for little more than an advanced point-and-click adventure game.
This takes the notion of console gaming and turns it into "Oscar" thriller territory. If that's appealing, and you're a fan of the slow-burning serial killer based movies like the ones we've listed above or others like Zodiac, then this will be right up your street.
Heavy Rain will be released in February 2010

The game won't be just QTEs though. I've drilled this into the ground though, so you take it for what it is. |
I know it isn't only QTEs, but it does use them and I hate them. I read about the control scheme for moving and manipulating things. It isn't just QTEs. However, I think of QTEs as the single worst innovation in gaming. Rock Band or Guitar Hero are about as far as I want to see button matching go. I'd rather spend a month with a Virtual Boy stappled to my head than see another game made with QTEs. I'm not kidding here, I really fucking hate them. They take control away from the player and make you pay attention not to the cinematic, but to focusing in on the place where the button flashes because if you don't hit it, you are dead or fail, or you miss your part in the Simon Says sequence that leads you to victory. Fuck QTEs, fuck them and the developers that use them.
Other than that, I think the game concept is interesting.
I give that post a 9.5.

some gameplay footage. (its from 29.11.2009. i am sorry if its already posted)
gameplay-wise not so much my cup of tea. =(
Right, not YOUR cup of tea. This is the Official Thread though, so negative comments won't go over well in here. I say this because of the other thread this is in.
you dont know how much critic i executed on gears 2 for lag
on fifa 10 for scripted gameplay - even online
on nfs shift for uncontrollable cars
...
...
the list goes on... Smile
its not like i hate the genre, i actually liked those story driven point and click advantures on my pc.
the game needs more action imo - action the likes of the train part in UC2!
this would work great with QTE and it would give you more variation.
dont get me wrong, i only critic games i am/was interested in.
the impressions were all GOOD and if the reviews turn out the same, this game is sold to me! ;)
(a lil bit offtopic: to make 1 thing clear, i will critic exclusive games as much as multiplatform games and i will critic them from a gamers point of view. i will ignore the fanboys who think they have to defend a game because its exclusive or because they are fanboys of the franchise (like the pes-fanboys and fifa-fanboys) or because they just felt in love with the game. there are a lot of things were games need to improve / where games are flawed and i will try to point them out. this, of course is all based on my own free opinion which you may agree or disagree with.)
