which is why i asked the question earlier..... can i take the movie of the hdd and put it on my laptop/portable media device?.. if i can then its a winner, if not it isnt for the reasons you say.

yes, but the problem is that a laptop hardly qualifies as a portable media device (I never took mine anywhere but my house and school) and things like the Zune HD are only capable of a few HD full length films and would take a long time to copy them over. So even if you can take it off the X360 it still isn't quite as free as audio files.

Honestly, the only thing stopping me from full digital music adoption is that I prefer CD quality over compressed audio quality and the fact that I like the iPod but I'm not willing to pay the price

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Yeah, but like nord said, you can't do it quickly.

Something like iTunes is successful because I hear a song on the radio on the way to work and I like it.  I sit down at my computer, open iTunes, and get the song.  Two minutes or less later I'm listening to the song and in another minute it's on my iPod.

With a movie, a movie might pop in my head and I head on over to my 360.  I tell it to download and...11 hours later it might be done.  After that I start transfering to my laptop somehow and an hour later that's finished.  Then I burn it to a disc (and probably on a BluRay burner I don't have) and still another hour later I can finally watch my movie somewhere else!

Don't get me wrong, I like movies on demand in 1080p, but I don't think it's going to catch like wildfire because getting something I can easily move is an all day thing.

-edit-

Guess easier way to say all that:

  • Something like iTunes makes buying music easier and more practical.  That's why it works.
  • Something like the 1080p movie marketplace makes buying the movies easier but is less practical.  That's why this won't work that well.

This is great for renting movies but not so much for buying them.

Guess 360 Arcade owners shouldve bought the higher models if they're interested in this.

I'd prefer just owning the physical copy, easier to carry and lend to people or bring over to a friend's place, nice box & cover, saves bandwidth, and possibly...saves time (sure driving to the store and buying it etc may take longer, but majority most go to the store enough on a weekly basis so its not like you really have to wait)

1. avoid mp3, try flac

2. if you prefer good sound quality the ipod is one of the porests choices you can make. Have a look around here for some better suggestions: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/

Battlefield 2: Gazz1979

Every one has made very good points but for all that this is great to have as a option and I have to give it up to ms for giving us that option.
Tweet what speed is your internet at lol 11 hours man the last hd movie only took around 3-4 hours to downlaod(watchman).

Did they mention the bitrate used for the encodes? Also, curious to know the horizontal resolution. 1080p has become more of a marketing term that can mask the underlying technology. If Xbox Live is able to offer Blu-ray quality via a digital distribution model, then that is incredible.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

You do know how much space a 1080p movie would take on your HDD.. if 1080p 5 mins episodes of pulse take half a gig of memory..

Well, good for xbox. But I'm sorry to say that a lotta people still like their HD movies on discs which they will obviously choose bluray therefore MS needs to figure something else out

Are youy really sorry to say? You mean you're HAPPY to say. You don't want it to suceed do you?

@Leo J

My friend rented Tremors in HD,720P and it was like 4 gigs,so 1080p will be like 6-8 gigs.

Oh here is another thing,if you buy the movie, and you wanna watch you can just stream it,or just dowload the hole thing.

Incredible?

By who's defenition, yours?

lol you do realise that pirate groups release 1080p rips that are basically "bluray" quality that come in at between 4-10GB depending on length and source quality.

Anyways, it's not "incredible". Incredible would be if I could fly with cerial boxes attached to my arms.
