In fact, the number of people I know with Blu-Ray is very slim compared to the number of people I know with Xboxes, PC's, HDTV's, or upconverting DVD players, so especially in my situation it would always be easier to go the Zune Marketplace method. |
I think adding PC's to your statement kind of skews your numbers a bit. The number of people I know with unicorns and PC's is much greater than the number of people I know with xboxes.
Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Okay, this is the service that allows streaming of these movies right? This is the 15th comment I've seen saying that it's going to take forever and too much hard drive space. Is this not the streaming service?

Yes, the service offers both streaming and full downloads. Your choice.

I realize there's streaming but the point of this possibly being a big deal is making these things portable. Since that's the case, I'm not concerned with streaming, I concerned with how long it takes me to get the movie portable.
I said earlier in the thread:
-edit-
And just for the record, I love the idea of streaming movies to rent, just not to buy. If I'm looking to rent a movie and I don't want to Netflix it (because every now and then I do want a movie now) I'll look to the Xbox 360 first before going to Blockbuster.

Thank you for taking the time to explain that to me in a rational manner. I actually thought I was losing my mind after reading through this thread, but that is a legitimate concern. Again, thanks!
As far as portability goes, you don't need to carry anything. On many services you can simply login with your account on another device and you're set. I'd rather carry nothing than a disc.
Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Yeah, I guess I forgot to think about streaming on other devices, though that gets into the whole I have to sign in on my friends Xbox, what if wherever I'm taking the movie to doesn't have something I can sign in with, what if I want to borrow or lend a movie, and what's the point of 1080p on a 2" Zune screen?
Call me old fashioned but with movies I just prefer having the disc and case (though I'm sure the wife would jump at any opportunity to get rid of my massive collection of DVD/BluRay's).

Zune HD can output in 720p via HDMI.

As time goes on, the services will become more ubiquitous. You'll be able to access your videos from the internet and wireless. Take a look at what Rhapsody does now. You can use it on any computer with a browser or iPhone and have acess to their entire libary. That's a huge libary of music, nore than any one person could hope to own. There is still a bit of infighting for control between devices, but eventually that will get worked out.
Eventually, that type of access will be available for video. You'll be able to watch anything at anytime anywhere. That is the future.
Everything, anywhere, anytime is something that physical media can't do.
