Forums - Sales - Why PS3 sales didnt move softwares?

inverted3reality said:
The issue is simple, and I really wish people would not make such a big deal out of this...

The ps3 was 299$. It launched at what time of the year? September. And what games released for the PS3 recently? Very few. If you're talking about old releases, why would you expect MASSIVE increases in those? The ps3 is a core gaming machine. It offers very little to casual gamers and has the superior core gaming lineup. Because of this, games like MGS4 which is a core game has an audience that would not of waited for the price drop. They own ps3s already.
That being said, MGS4 sales Were way up, Killzone 2 sales were way up, Uncharted Sales were way up, Batman: Arkham Asylum continued to outsell the 360, CoD4: MW sales are up, CoD: WaW sales are up, Fight Night round 4 sold well, and a bunch of other old software saw many small jumps and bumps.

The incorrect analysis is to say that ps3 owners were upgrading, not many people did this.
The Proper analysis is to consider the following.

Used sales. The ps3 was cheap, why not get the games used? We all know software isn't going to go up too much because of used sales! Come on now people, grow up! Used sales for PS3 games were most likely through the roof last week. If MGS4, KZ2, LBP, Valkyria Chronicles etc.. were not enough for you to get a ps3 before, you're not the kind of person that hates buying used.

Also, the PS3 has the largest catalogue of core games, meaning that sales are distributed. People probably didnt go out and buy three games, they got 1 or maybe 2. With such a massive selection of amazing games to choose from, you can be assured that sales were spread out over a large amount of titles.

The true effect of the PS3 slim will be how LONG these boosts last. Like MGS4, will it die off next week? or will it stay over 20k? Will Infamous continue to sell over 20k/week? Will KZ2 die off? Those are the questions. Software was universally up for the PS3. A lot of people are also waiting for the new games to come and buying used old games, I mean, they are obviously price conscious people or they would of bought the PS3 at 399 like the rest of us did.

What?!?! Are you looking at the same sales charts as we are. Sales were not WAY UP on Killzone 2 or Uncharted.  Uncharted sales double, but it was bundled and should have sold at least 10x's what it sold last week. That used games BS isn't cutting. Sales could be spread out among many titles, but popular must have games likes Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone 2, Infamous, LPB all should have had over 50K sales. Most of the PS3 Slims were sold in Europe (Which I predicted would happen.  Who kept saying USA? lol!!) where they praise Blu-Ray's crystal clear picture quality. I honestly think at least 50% of those chaps bought it as a Blu-Ray player, as the players in Europe are probably still more expensive then they are here in the states.

Killzone 2 12,000 to 20,795  (+8795)

Infamous 17528 to 21,439   (+3911)

Uncharted 8506 - 18688      (+10182)

1. Week before Slim comes out : I doubt the price cut will make a difference, there is no demand.

2. Announcement 76k sold in NA: You see, with most retailers selling it, it only outsold 360 by 1000.

3. Article predict over 100k in JAPAN: Crazy, that can never happen, 60k most it can sell, silly ps3fanboys.
4. Oh, boy 1000% increase in UK: Well, that's nothing, as you can see that's 3 months of pent up demand, and it's not really 1000?% if you compare it to other weeks.
5. ioi announce over 500k sold for week: Well, that was expected, let's wait for next week.
6. ioi announce 144k in NA : Well, that was expected, It's the first week
7. 150k PS3 Slim sold in japan: They all exciting PS3 owners
8. 550k sold for the Week : But they didn't buy software.

Yep the doom and gloom will never go away, there will always be questions as to why Sony fail one way or another. Bottomline Sony destoryed  everything with the slim. Now all we have left is butthurt...

The used games argument doesn't work unless there's some special reason to buy used games this week. Used and new games would be expected to rise proportionately to eachother with the increase in hardware sales.

Absolutely not. It's the price concious individual buying the PS3 this week. New software will only see a little bump, while used software will see a massive bump.

The effect of the PS3 sales on new games will be shown when NEW games are released. IE Batman:AA, Uncharted 2, etc.

Why GH5(PS3) didnt outsell GH5(X360) then?

oh idk, 18 million vs 9 million had nothing to do with it.

Yeah and 24.5M (Wii) vs 18.3M (X360) but GH5 X360 is > than GH5 Wii.

Nice try.

The sales of Guitar Hero have nothing to do with it. Guitar hero is a game like rockband, it's on its own. 80-90% of people who play rockband are non gamers. A large percentage of that bought the 360 arcade JUST to play rockband. Thats why it sells more on the 360.

Can you send me a link which can proves your claim or you just find that by yourself?

Right, however the price drop was announced a bit back, and they have been rising since then.

Games are under tracked as well. You're all just looking at a reason to hate on the ps3. I can't wait till you have no more excuses left. It's really silly.

9. The week after PS3 sold 250k WW.

10. The week after PS3 sold 150k WW.

Ah the cycle of life... :P

*crosses out Slim on savior board*

Better luck next time, PS3 fans!

Prove me wrong. Real life experience has shown that to be true. The PS3 sales boost is amazing, games are going to rise, new releases of non-casual games are going to continue to rise in outselling the 360, more developers will put more work into PS3 games, sony will announce yet another year of best in class software and we'll keep rolling out.

Anyone who thinks a price drop is going to boost old software way up is silly, its the new software coming that will show the difference.

Aside from Japan, I believe it's well accounted for by the fact that Batman AA launched last week.

Hhhmm.. what does Batman AA have to do with Uncharted, MGS4, LBP, Killzone 2 and Infamous not selling 100K copies this past week? Especially if you are buying a PS3 for the first time. Sure, I'd get Batman too, but I'd get at least 2 of these other games as well.

You really expected the software sales of each of those to rise that much? O_0

Hell yeah. Even 50K would have been nice. That's less then 10% of PS3 sold. How did Killzone 2, LBP and MGS4 not sell 50K with over 500K PS3 Slims being sold. Those are hugely popular titles and MSG4 sold almost 1 million copies when it launched, did it? The increase of these titles were less then 10K from the previous week. That's not good at all. Maybe people are waiting for the holidays.

'gaming till I'm gone'

Ive read all the comment and it seems most people are looking at that the wrong way. There were no special release this week or last week so lets calculate the sells per console.

There was 1.24 M SW sold, out of 23.42 M console.  This is roughly 5.3%.

Now we have 1.44 M SW sold, out of 23.97M console. This is roughly 6%.

Another way to look at it is: 200k more HW sales out ouf 550k more console. It means that 36.4% of people getting the new console also purchase a new game. Like other people said theres also bundle/used game and maybe people waiting for their next weeks income before buying, renting games for now. My point is that 1.44M compare to 1.24M seems like nothing but in the end its only 550K more console out of 24 million.

Again, no one here has any proof. these are just horrible threads of people in denial. I am happy for sony, they are the last bastion of true gaming, you should be happy for them too.
