Forums - PC - Microsoft training BestBuy employees on Linux, lol

truth is.. they dont need to do this.

the average joe isnt going to choose linux... linux is dying (latest marketshare show it has reduced) and it will be killed off by other OS (eg Google) in the coming years

errrrr.....

Linux, or rather GNU/Linux isn't one entity. Its more like a commonly owned commodity, like Tomato Sauce. Everyone knows whats in it, and people can repackage it and sell it, but no one really "owns" the copyright for the Tomato Sauce recipe.

Anyways, my point is that Google's OS is just another linux distro anyways, so the more the merrier, IMO.

@ Soleron : Proprietary as in "came with the disc" or proprietary as in "originated in the default update package?" I think it was just a moment of poor quality control that hosed a bunch of early adopters.

@ Senlis : I agree with you. The nice part about Linux is that we can fix these issues ourselves. I wrote a custom setup file for ndiswrapper so that my wireless card would be usable a couple years back. I'm hoping that eventually Linux has the ease of use Windows does along with its own inherent fix-ability.

There are no proprietary drivers on the disc or by default in updates; all of the default drivers are open. Just because you can install proprietary software after installation doesn't mean you should.

Ah I see what you were asking.  They were open then.

OK. The drivers are pretty new due to all of the X.org churn recently, but I agree graphics driver issues are the major sticking point of Linux adoption. That and wireless drivers. But I'm saying it'll improve soon.

You'd think that if ever they were to do something like this, they'd target Crapple, and not Linux.

Okay so here's where it starts getting bad.

No iPod support? Really? And the Zune doesn't work on the Mac either although there has been some progress from the Linux community. And I've never had any problems pulling pictures from cameras.

I've yet to see a printer that doesn't have a driver. You might have to download it from the products website though (gasp!).

Yeah yeah. Software. Although WINE has been vastly improving lately (we even got around that stupid Secu-ROM).

There are free alternatives to all of the Windows Live "essentials".

WOW. Of all the games to mention, they mention World of Warcraft. I wrote a tutorial on how to get WoW running on Linux not to long ago. Its probably the easiest game to set up with in WINE.

Authorized support? Well you have Red Hat and Canonical, oh I guess you can count Novell...

Video chat with Pidgin? Or Skype?

I don't have time to refute the rest, but I'll post the screenies.

  • Learn to read-- it doesn't say no iPod support, it says limited (or few),
  • As far as I know, WoW does not work natively on Linux.  You have to go do funyn stuff and read a tutorial like you wrote in order to get it to work.
  • They're probably talking about things like this were you have people at places like Best Buy that must complete some sort of training.
  • Again, learn to read.  The word you're missing here is "all."

All in all, I'm not sure why you think this is so rediculous.  If you're making something to teach how to sell something to people, of course they are going to do everything in their power to make it sound more awesome than the other thing.

because it's lie,

banshe supports all ipods except touch and iphone (if doens't already) full music sync.

WoW runs under wine with little or no trouble.

hell i can even play COD4.

there are ways to sell not telling lies, look how nokia have the mobile market on their hands with over 40% marketshare.

microsoft even removing dumbphones only have 3% of the smartphone marketshare.

drivers wise ubuntu have progressed a lot i install everything with a single interface.

my nvidia 185 drivers, my canon printer, all USB devices work flawlessly.

something i can't say about windows, i can even set my 5.1 speakers because drivers are not working well

they should talk about their benefits, office 2010 , Window live essentials it's pushing it

at most but the rest are bullshit lies.
