Nice post, i agree with it completely.

Well, it's not really fair to compare the entire generation. Though, actually, the PS2 generation got nearly a 60 million boost from its competitors. The PS1 got something like 40 million.

The PS2 didn't expand gaming massively, but it did to a certain extent. That's not why it deserves the top spot. This is why it deserves the top spot (I know Metacritic is inaccurate, but for a vague idea it's great- everything is on one page, and colour coded).

Notice how many are sequels to games that appeared on the PS1

and how many were inspired by games that were on the PS1

without the PS1 This wouldnt even exist.

To some extend this also can be said to the PS1 vs NES

1. Nintendo's best selling home console? I know you're excluding current gen from being in the LIST but that doesn't mean you get to ignore the Wii's EXISTENCE.
2. Is the author such a PS freak that he can't even say the NES was the best selling console ever without taking a cheap shot about the PS1 selling more, despite that it happened two generations later? Or is it something else?
3. And then he spends quite a bit of time undermining the NES's accomplishments, apparently because 'it couldn't have been that bad if the NES made the industry recover'.

1) It is the best selling Nintendo home console. The Wii hasn't sold as much as it yet. The NES sold 62 million, the Wii is at 53 million. Yes, the Wii will overtake it, but the DS will overtake the GameBoy soon. Does that mean the GameBoy isn't currently the best selling handheld of all time?

2) Well, it's true. He's simply pointing out how long the NES was king of sales.

3) He said it was the second best console of all time! He clearly likes it, saviour or not.

Whatever, it's better than the IGN list. And the PS2 is the best console ever, by popular opinion. And PSP > DS may be bad, but worse than X360 > PS1? Worse than 2600 > PS2? I think not.

Before saying that, you might want to read the whole write up.

I am only talking about the positioning of each console, not the ridiculously biased write-ups.

1. So you're saying that's why the article is so poorly written -- because he rushed it to print before that statement became false?

2. Actually, it gives no indication of the amount of time the NES held the title. Plus, of course we know it's not still the best selling console -- there was no need for the parentheses, and it's misleading to someone uninformed who would IMO probably think from that that it only had a short time before the PS1 surpassed it.

3. I know he likes it, I'm saying he was looking for reasons to justify putting the PS2 (which he likes MORE) ahead of it.

4. Best by popular opinion? So when the Wii outsells the PS2 you'll agree that THAT console is the best ever?

5. Anyway, you're only nipping at the sides of an overarching argument. Look at his NES description. Look at his PS2 description. Heck, look at the description for the PS1, which he rated BENEATH the NES -- he gives more wholehearted credit to that for expanding the industry than he does to the NES for SAVING the industry. Are you seriously trying to say that his writeups don't betray bias?

1) The statement won't become false for another six months or so.

2) He said that it was the best selling console until the PS1 took the crown. A perfectly accurate statement. It isn't still the best selling console.

3) There isn't much justification needed. He just preferred the games on the PS2. Like many people.

4) Not the best, but the most popular, yes. "Best" is completely subjective.

5) I'm not saying that the article isn't biased, I was just pointing out that your statements were inaccurate.

You agree that the PSP should be that far ahead of the DS?  Really?

#1 is dreadfully wrong, and the reason IGN made their list and this thing made it's list is pretty clear.
HE'S AN AMATEUR. Handhelds are not consoles and as such, shouldn't be judged on the same scale.
Not only that, but the research (and general videos knowledge) is so shitty it's inexcusable.

I didn't say it was good, I said it was better than IGN's list. There's a difference.

Wow, this list is even worse than IGN's list! People have already summed up why the list is full of fail, so instead I offer my list instead:

15. Gamecube (psuedo-portable)
14. Game Boy Advance (update with 100% backward compatibilty)
13. XBox 360 (first to do HD on consoles) [tentative rank for current system]
12. PS2 (most successful, 1st to use DVD)
11. Wii (expansion to non-gamers) [tentative rank for current system]
10. Game Gear (first successful color handheld)
9. Vectrex (first home console ever)
8. Atari 2600 (switchable cartridges, difficulties)
7. Genesis (successfully making a 2 system market, 3rd action button)
6. Dreamcast (first with success online, VMU screen)
5. DS (2 screen portables, integrating a touch screen)
4. Game Boy (first portable)
3. NES (revived market, scrolling screens)
2. PS1 (portable saves, 1st disc-base to succeed)
1. SNES (top controller buttons, 6 action buttons, first to merge console and portables)

-On a quest for the truly perfect game; I don't think it exists...

I hate how handhelds are included in lists like this. There should be no DS, GB, GBA or PSP on the list.

But wayyyyyyyyy better #1 pick. PS2 had way more, better games than NES.

2.  No one is denying that it's literally true.  I'm saying that the way he said it would tend to mislead an uninformed person about how long it was the best selling console ever, and also that his comments are out of line for the types of writeups he was supposedly doing.

4.  You said "And the PS2 is the best console ever, by popular opinion."  That is what I was responding to -- the idea that the PS2 was the best and that that was substantiated by popular opinion.  If you didn't mean to allege thatt, then never mind.

3.  If you put up this kind of list as an editorial feature, it's kind of expected IMO to have actual reasons beyond personal preference, which is apparently all he needed according to what you just said.

5.  You agree that his writeups are "ridiculously biased", but you think that all my specific examples of ridiculous bias are inaccurate?  Well I'd be interested in hearing what IS ridiculously biased if what I've pointed out isn't biased.
