Forums - Sony - BC or ps2, what's the difference?

The upscaling to me is quite noticeable.
On the other hand, my ps2 games are split between 3 regions (though PAL only accounts for.. two games) so I'm keeping the ps2 even with my B/C ps3.
I don't think they'll make B/C region free any time soon, I'll probably just get a Japanese PS4 to go with the US PS3 in some years.

Sony deserves to catch criticism for their own pimping of backwards compatibility then abandoning an entire platform. There are plenty of people who want it, though it still seems overemphasized as a feature that sony needs right now. A PS2 with HDloader (greatly reduces load times) hooked up to a large SDTV, along with your other SD systems > PS2 Upscaling on even the nicest HDTV. The only exception to this are some later PS2 games that support 16:9 and look great on the ps3.

There's a couple ps2 rhythm games (Frequency, Amplitude) that are unplayable on an HDTV due to lag and the ps3 triggers which means PS3 BC doesn't really work with two of my favorite games.

If my PS3 had PS2 BC I would use it alot. I still play PS2 games far more than PS3/X360/Wii combined.

@twesterm,

There are SONY official PS2 wireless controllers, though it seems they can be pretty rare. Just FYI.

Do you have a link to a photo or any proof of this controllers existance. I cant find one anywhere on the interwebs.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

those are all good features, but is it really a reason not to buy something?
When i got dvd, i didn't care about getting a dvd/vcr. I just used both... but maybe it's not the a good comparison.

But I'm sure you would be upset if you bought a Blu-Ray player and it didn't play DVDs.  It's the same principle.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

BC rocks for several reasons:

Upscaling and AA!
HDD-based memory cards, so no fumbling around with multiple cards.
Wireless first party controllers!
Everything contained in one unit.

If you have a headache or body ache BC powder will help a lot more than a PS 2.

I remember a lot of complaints of lack of BC on the 40GB ps3. I also remember a lot of those complaints being described as obstacles to buying the 40GB.

Back then, we used to just say, "Buy a ps2 if you really wanna play ps2 games, it's only 79$ used".

Now, we have a 120GB slim ps3 along with BC (a ps2) for 20$ less than the 40gb was. Yet there are still the same complaints we saw before the price drop.

To people who don't own a ps3 yet: Does onboard BC really make that much of a difference?

To people who do own a ps3: Do you have BC or a ps2? Or does it even matter?

Personally I don't have a ps2, and I don't see the need for one between ps3, PC, DS, and soon to be GO. Plus hanging out, and tv, and the sex and stuff. Even if I had BC I don't think I'd be playing it that much.

With a PS2 and PS3 I get:

  • A PS2 sitting in the middle of nowhere because I have no room in my entertainment center.
  • Have to deal with another input in my receiver.
  • Have to deal with a console that doesn't have wireless controllers (yes, there are those crappy 3rd party ones but they're crappy).
  • I can't turn on my PS2 with my universal remote.

With my PS3 with BC I get:

  • One less console so less clutter
  • upscaled games

So yeah, I still think it's shitty that at the start of this generation that Sony was all about BC and laughed at others for not having it and now it's not important.  Luckily I have a PS3 with BC but then there's the chance that if it breaks (and it's starting to get really loud and about 2/3 of the time doesn't recognize any of my BlueTooth devices) and I send it in for repairs I won't get a BC PS3 back.

Logitech wireless controllers are imho much better than orginal DS2 :)

Another advantage for ps3 with bc is connectivity to pc monitor without spending $70 on active converter like HDbox.

PS2's break like wet tissue paper.

I've replaced 3.

I'm much happier having a durable PS3 that can do BC.

Had the PS3 not done BC I likely wouldn't of bought it.  Not until about $199 anyway.

If mine breaks i'm more then likely going to try and repair it myself.

BC is overated. It stretches and warps the picture, and it also shows all the faults up closer in HD. Better to play PS2 games with a PS2.
