I see what you mean. I don't think FF characters ever has been designed to look "typical", neither males nor females. Maybe because they're meant to be "fantasies" . For me, Final Fantasy has always been about non-typical design. And I'm not just talking about characters but FF as a whole.

About the characters, sexy girls sell...and I don't mind as long as they're not making them Soul Calibur sexy. That I wouldn't like. It would be nice to see some "typical" girls from time to time though.

To find series with more typical characters you have to play Lunar or Suikoden or something like that.

it's great that you mentioned that, because that's exactly what makes suikoden so wonderful. the characters are all so realistic (though some are over the top, they are such just for humor, and all have obvious flaws).

I personally don't find Lightning to be that attractive, anyway although I liked Cloud I hope Lightning doesn't become a Cloud clone, we only need one of him running around.

I don't agree with the headline.. i actually found FFXII to have the most average/realistic/typical-looking women yet in a FF (still good-looking though ;)).
The increase in detail in the later litterations might make it seem so though.
