Forums - Sony - Why are some hyping Demon Soul like it is a game changer?

@dgc1808 I think it deserves the hype , and NEEDS it, precisely because it's a niche game, a very hardcore game and it won't have a wide release, all-out marketing campaign. Even if it were to get straight 10s and 9s from the major media outlets (and it WON'T) I doubt its sales would reflect it.

Of course it also deserves all the good word of mouth it can get because it really is a VERY good game, and I don't see any other RPG this year in any console holding a candle to it. Sure it's not for everybody, it takes some effort but it's not that hard.

I have a friend who's the kind of player that never strays into niche territory, ever. Even worse, my friend stays away from any challenging game, or any "laborious" gameplay that might frustrate him. I have to tell you he loves Demon's Souls, and he thinks of it as one the best games he's ever played! And he's not even that big of a RPG player.

Who is cornered in this situation? I hope you mean Richard because his claims have already been proven to be completely false.

There is nothing to corner the PS3 and/or Demon's Souls fans with.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Eyepet will be a game changer.

I'd like it if the game got more attention as well. We know the game won't be a Blockbuster success but some hype would get more games to look into the title. Games like this will come across the average person's attention perhaps once, then the next day they forget all about it. Another bad thing about it is that Atlus is the publisher. They don't really have the money and resources for a good advertising campaign...

Well if this thread showed us anything is that Demon's Souls needs MORE HYPE!!!! lol

Fine, if it is THAT good, then do hype it up.  I guess no one is going on record to say it is a "game changer" though.  I have seen far too many titles hyped as "game changers", with Killzone 2 being the prime example.  Coming as a sequel to the "Halo Killer", it was supposed to win over the XBox player to the PS3 for FPS action.

Here's the problem. If we hype it up just for being a good game, are guys like you going to come out and call it a failure when it doesn't sell 300K first week? [Which it most likely has ZERO chance at]

The debate gets framed in the context of moving consoles and selling.  Too often games on the PS3 are positioned as "game changers" by some, and the game has to be held up to high standards as far as sales go.  Killzone 2, rather than just be a good FPS, was positioned by Sony themselves in a executive press release, as a game that would win 360 owners over (or at least get them to look at the PS3).  And then I saw Resistance 2 get fragged by the Sony fan side, because it didn't match Gears 2 in sales.  End result, one can't just talk up a game as being great, it has to win over people to consoles.  I guess it is the nature of a website like this, that is centered around sales.
