Sony's PS3 "cost to build" had, as of July 2009, dropped by roughly 70 points since the system launched in 2006. GameSpot's estimates are that it costs Sony around $252.10 per unit (down from original launch cost estimates of $840.35 per unit). If that's roughly accurate--packaging, transportation, and miscellaneous costs notwithstanding--there's every reason to believe the $100 price drop won't snap Sony's back. If the Slim sells well, it should be a bottom-line booster, as opposed to a Pyrrhic sales generator. |
Does this contradict what Kaz said about the PS3 Slim losing money? It would appear so. However, they just have to bitet he bullet on the PS3 HW sales and make bug bucks on SW (and peripherals). Not sure that is a sound business strategy but it's the right thing to do in the current state of things.
It is true that at this 299 price point, the PS3 is an amazing offer and this holiday sales war will be very entertaining!
Elaine: I will never understand people
Jerry: They're the worst.
the title of this article should be 'why sony is good'
nintendo fanboy, but the good kind
proud soldier of nintopia
sony is still losing money on Slim, but thanks to overpriced PSP GO they will make about 100+$ on each PSP GO sold to customer who were just ripped of by buying this overpriced handheld. they also make profit selling ps2s and normal psps.

And as I predicted, all the websites are switching from "PS3 Slim will do nothing" mode to "PS3 Slim will outsell the Bible" mode. Though I thought they might actually wait for the PS3 Slim to launch. Perhaps they saw some sales numbers? (PS3 sales up 30% already).
If you label your article "10 reasons why the PS3 Slim will save Sony", shouldn't it actually contain 10 reasons the PS3 Slim will save Sony?
How is "Losing the option to install other operating system's is irrelevant" a reason the PS3 Slim will save Sony? If I launched a lawnmower that didn't have an MP3 jack, would that be a reason for it to appeal to people?
I agree with the general sentiment that the PS3 Slim will be much helpful for Sony, but that's not really a very good article.

The ps3 slim is better and will save Sony because it's slim.
You see no one likes a fatty and the original ps3 was like super fat, like the fat girl no one asks out. That's why the Wii sold really well, because it's small like the hot thin girls with zero personality and no substance.
Now that the ps3 went on a diet and lost all the weight, it's thin and pretty therefore it can join the popular group.
No one likes a fatty that was Sony's mistake from the start,
The Most important reason of all: Its now only $299 which people can actually afford
