I never got the point why you would want to talk to a friend playing a different game.

Actually I do.

We created a party with some friends yesterday. Some were playing Lost Planet 2 demo in coop, others RE5.

We talked while everybody was finishing his current game to finally all join in a BF1943 game.

Sometimes, I also join party to discuss with friends, even if they are busy in another game.

People can also drop in/out without the intervention of the party leader... etc.

Kinda cool.

I was doing it when I was playing the PC and people were talking to me on Skype. I find it annoying.

Maybe I'm just antisocial.

Talking in the same game is useful but talking in a different game...

"Player on game 1 : Hey cool I just finished the 4th chapter.

Other player on game 2 : Shut up, I don't care, I'm trying to focus on that boss and I'm almost dead ... Leave me alone !"

Maybe you are ;)

@sly777, want an advise? Buy the one in which you can find your favorite games.

In fact, we are talking about cross-games feature but it is not that.

XBOX Live allows you to be connected to different chat channels and switch from one to another (even without leaving your party If I'm not mistaken).

Here is a (very old, pre-NXE) picture of the functionality.

Every time you join a game, you have access to the dedicated chat channel of the current session (it pops up in your available chat list).

You can also create multiple private chats channel or simply use the automatic one that is created for the party you just joined.

Cross-game chatting is not a feature, more like a way to use the system...

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

@Sardauk, good explanation!

Like is saying, you can use the game channel, private channel or party channel. And you can jump from one to others.

If you want privacy you can jump out of the party or you can turn off your mic, others will see the "busy" sign.

Black RL speaks the truth. It is the only feature on Xbox Live that I want on PSN. Since we are being honest and all, did you know that you don't have to pay $50 (a year) to play your (PS3) games online? Just keep that in mind when you are lamenting the lack of voice chat.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Yeah I am sure we won't have to pay for PSN this gen, certainly for online multiplayer

@dbot, I already mention that in a previous post. But although you have to pay, you don't have to pay that much. You have to search, for example:

http://xboxliveuk76.com/

Or

http://www.instantlivecodes.com/

You have to look.

So what happens when Sony implement this feature? You guys are using this excuse a lot lately. I love damage control.

@Munkeh111, SONY was also sure about many things. With the PS3 price dropping and with the PSN getting better and better (that's the truth) they have to get money to cover up expenses.

And since this generation is here to stay.....

Paying for a subscription would certainly seem to be a possibility, especially as the long-rumored feature upgrades come filing into the PlayStation Network. When speaking with Geoff Keighley on the latest edition of Gametrailers' Bonus Round, Eric Lempel spoke about the PlayStation Network's current free service and that, "in time, anything can change." Comparing the PlayStation Network to Microsoft's Xbox Live service, Lempel, Sony's director of Network Operations reconfirmed "we're working on an achievements system," describing its inclusion as "an important feature." Voice-chat across all games is also something (thankfully) that Mr. Lempel touched base on, saying "talking across games ... definitely builds momentum for games and actually migrate(s) users to other games and keeps you in touch with your gaming community." We couldn't agree more.

Exactly when these implementations will make it to a PS3 near you, via firmware upgrade, is uncertain. "It's not in the next firmware update but it's something we're working on," says Mr. Lempel. We certainly hope so, though we are catching wind of the potential trade-off here. What do you think? Would you pay a subscription fee (similar to Xbox Live) for a plan that allows cross-game invites, built-in voice chat for all multiplayer games and a similar achievement points implementation? Or would you rather say the heck with all that, and voice to keep the PlayStation Network free for all, setting it apart from Microsoft's Xbox Live service?

Microsoft say they are not scared of the Slimline PlayStation 3.

I wish the 360 owners felt the same...
