I just think the price for blu-ray movies are just too much and I for one won't buy any until prices drop sub £10 (UK), £22 for Indy Jones 4 (you having a laugh).  But I did buy Rambo 4 from gamestation once for £10 and thats a price Im willing to pay.

I rent my blu-ray movies from blockbusters.  You can buy the same movie on DVD for half the price but if you own a 1080p HDTV you can see the diffence.  Once you watch a HD movie you never want to go back to standard TV again.

ain't that the pure honest truth.

QFT

Not for me. Sometimes you see detail you don't want to see, say for example the pores in Apocalypto.

be honest, you're talking about surgical scars in porn.

having watched HDTV, my wife cannot stand watching SDTV... and the PVR is the devil, too.

Not getting cheaper...I find it strange cause the last few Blu-Rays I've purchased have all been under $20 some as cheap as $9.99. I see Blu-Rays getting cheaper.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

Need a sub 100 USD player and movie releases to drop close to DVD prices.

Otherwise I just cannot justify the cost.

50 million in three years? I'm sure DVD sold more than that.

That depends on whether or not you count the PS2, probably.

But, no, BD is not being adopted as quickly as DVD.  That much is clear.  And in china, it looks like BD is losing to their high def format.

Part of the issue is that BD movies are too expensive.   Most people have tons of HD these days (except cable customers -- they don't have nearly as much HD as satellite customers).  Part of the issue is that DVD is still very good, even with a high def set and a good surround system, a lot of DVDs hold up against BDs extremely well.  Not everyone is wiling to pay the premium to get better picture.

whatever the article says, 3 years, 50 million.... it's not the 90ies anymore, people buy electronics everywhere not just in the states and Japan. The DVD comparisons are stupid just for that.

DVD launch, still early for the internet, most people can't even type on a keyboard, new technologies are ackward for the masses, especially High tech expensive ones. The initial market for DVD is limited.

BR launch, people all have internet capable camera-phones in their pockets and try whatever new technological gimmick comes out. The initial market for BR is enormous.

Not the same world as it was 10 years ago. BR is a failure (probably due to HD-DVD war).

DVD only had competition from VHS and there numerous added and obvious benefits in DVD over VHS (scene selection etc.). Not only this, but Blu-Ray also has the fact that you need an HDTV to enjoy it making the entry price much higher than DVD ever was.

I agree with this statement. Blu Ray is not the perceived leap over it's predecessor that DVD was. It also is far overpriced in the market; and stop telling me about Amazon prices. Average people will purchase movies at the local Target or whatnot.

Possible but if those DVD players numbers also included PS2 numbers it is not shocking.

Anyway star scream posted a link sometime ago from a blu ray forum where you could see blu ray is gaining market and that total dvd profit so far is losing 5-10% compared to last year.  Blu ray is getting popular and is hurting DVD (slowly) more and more.

well the first dvd players came out in early 1997 in the US so the PS2 isn't out yet.  That's one of the big differences between blu-ray and DVD though, DVD was ready to be adopted right when the PS2 came out, blu-ray was not.  Blu-ray was being pushed by PS3 right from the beginning, player releasing only a few months before the PS3.  So up until this point blu-ray has been carried by PS3, and for DVD PS2 hasn't even come out yet.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Its not beating DVD uptake not by a long shot.

I know PR people have to massage the figures to make claims but they have to be believable claims or they just end up doing damage.

At this point in its life cycle DVD was in a 50/50 unit sales tie with VHS. Its very obvious Blu Ray cannot make the same claim.

Well since I can find Bluray for the same price as DVD, I don't see the need for it to drop anymore anyways.

They are getting cheaper but not fast enough.  When Blu-ray first came out films were like nearly £30 in the UK and the newer films are mostly between £16-£24.
