HDTV are already mainstream.

Those numbers don't really mean anything. It's the same way Halo 3 and Blue Dragon other games are in the top 20 most wanted in Famitsu and when they come out their sales numbers don't match their "hype". Clearly the 360 will outsell the PS3 this holiday season, so who really cares that some random survey says that. Use the survey inside your brain that tells you what will actually happen.

How is that nobody wants a car? lol

My most wanted? How about a new house? Or my own desert Island?

Does anyone actually get a HD-TV for Xmas? Thats... a rather pricey gift!

Growing up my father always gave us a large "Santa" present as a family rather than buying everyone their own little present; this would work out to be a new computer, tv, or videogame system and would often cost a similar ammount to a HDTV today. I don't think many people get gifts like this but I do know that families often make one (or several) large purchases at christmas.

A more disturbing trend I heard of was that the average American spends $4,000 at Christmas so maybe there are a lot of HDTVs given to individuals.

Are you sure about thatlast bit? I could dig up some data, but the highest quote I heard was $1,000.

And it also depends on how the survey was conducted ...

The reality is that wanting a HDTV, Cellphone, PS3, Wii or XBox 360 for Christmas are not distinct sets; some people who want a HDTV will also want a cellphone, PS3, Wii and/or XBox 360 as an example. If you ask someone a question like "What gift do you want most this Christmas?" you will potentially get a much different answer than "What gift do you want most this Christmas that you are realistically going to receive?" I may personally want a new Laptop but I'm certainly not going to get a laptop from anyone so my answer would be drastically different.

I believe it was average American, although I admit that it could be average American family ... Regardless, it was a lot more money than me and my (mostly) well employed close family ever spend so it surprised me.
