Similar story conventions like mist, and sucking the earth dry, and I never really liked the character design either.
I dunno, I was young, I guess they really weren't all that similar. The story was just so slow, and the graphics weren't that interesting and the level design was poor and bland. I dunno, I played this right after playing ff7, so maybe it was a comparison effect.
