Forums - Sales - Piracy not theft because its a copy..

Copyright infringement is theft but I accept your legal definition if it helps you sleep at night.

Piracy is certainly one issue the other is the second hand market now which in some ways has the same impact of piracy and that has no legal restraint yet certainly takes sales from the developers and publishers.

I think David Braben brought this issue up some time ago and suggested it should be more like the Movie business with more emphasis on the rental. I am inclined to agree.

If that was aimed at me, I'd like to point you towards my game collection - Every single copy bought legally. I assure you, I have no trouble sleeping at night, but nice try at guilting people.

Again, if that was, in fact, aimed at me.

Counterfeiting money isn't theft. That is entirely correct.

Its forgery, another crime.

Piracy is copyright infringement, another entirely seperate crime from both forgery and theft.

So no piracy is not theft. Doesn't make it right though =P.

Yep counterfeiting money is making a "physical" copy of legal tender.

Your logic proves the point.

Counterfeiting is not classed as theft in the same way that copying a DVD is not theft.

Both are ILLEGAL and CRIMINAL acts which have required seperate laws to govern them.

Taking a 10 dollar bill with no intention to return is THEFT.

Making a copy of a 10 dollar bill is COUNTERFEITING.

Making a copy of a DVD is COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT.

I did say you can argue the moral ambiguities till the cows come home and I dont mean to tread on anyones toes.

BUT the Law is BLACK and WHITE on these matters. It has to be or people find ways to exploit the law.

Or it is plaugued by a lack of consistency in application.

Nope not aimed at you, but you must be guilty of something  I just have not found what it is yet.

Haha, yep, but not piracy-related. Sorry for snapping at you :)

Hush Cypher you are going to bring death upon this thread. :P

I will sit here and openly admit that I pirate plenty of games but at the same time I can honestly sit here and also say that 99% of the titles I pirate I will never buy. I do this a lot with the Wii. I have a 500GB HDD hooked up to my Wii and I try out many titles, I also do this because some games like Disaster will never come to the US and modding is the only way for me to be able to play it.

If I really like a game and feel it warrants a purchase I may end up going out and buying it but if I never had any intention what so ever to buy these games in the first place I don't see the big deal. I also have a Gamefly account, does that make me bad because I pay $15 a month and play all the games I want and do not give a dime to the developers? These guys get paid salary, it is probably the higher ups enjoying all this money.

Anyways I have plenty of titles I buy first day. I own 24 PS3 titles, 18 360 titles and 14 Wii titles so regardless of what anyone says even though I pirate I know for certain I have pumped a lot more back into this industry than many of those who would shit talk me.

Don't like that I pirate? Oh well, simple as that.

How's that for honesty?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

For those who care I paid $600 for a PS3, $350 for a 360, $250 for a Wii and all of the titles I own were purchased as new because I don't like used for some reason. So there is thousands and thousands pumped into the industry for you.

How much has Superchunk pumped back in? More than this pirate right here?
