Nice work on discovering absolutely nothing. Scans that read as Not on File are emblematic of no deeper truth then a erroneous entry. The retail channel of any store has hundreds if not thousands of not on files in their systems. They can be anything from discontinued merchandise to erroneous data entry, and a back order can be nothing more then department specific merchandising supplies that automatically reorder.

In other words its far more likely that his backtracking is in response to a automated order for his precious register tape, and they haven't figured out that the head office has changed their supplier. Thus the number has been changed on them.

Trust me when I say that guy behind the counter doesn't know anything more then you do. I would in fact say he actually knows less. When you work in retail you know the value of the canned reply.
