We would not have enemies in gaming had there not been for those lost souls...

If we are talking about the whole gaming industry then by far the US has been the greatest contributor and it's not even close. Even when the market was dominated by Japanese consoles who do you think designed the hardware Tech inside those console ? Who do you think created the first Video game, Arcade game, Game console ? Who do you think created the first 3D polygon and created real 3D graphics ? and lastly Who designed the CPU and GPU for all the consoles on the market today ?

The answer to above is the US clear and simple. Every genre that is poplar today was born by a US dev even RPGs the only genre Japan created is probably rape games !!

I'm telling you guys if you want to look at it in an objectively matter than any answer other than the US is a wrong answer, sorry.

I would disagree with that.

Sure, the US may have created the technology. But let's look at the actual games and consoles.

Nintendo- Japanese

Sega- Japanese

Sony- Japanese

Pac-Man

Mario

Zelda

Gran Turismo

Final Fantasy

Every other Square game

Metal Gear Solid

At least on consoles, the industry-defining games have been Japanese. Look at any "Most Influential Characters in Gaming" list- the majority will be from Nintendo, who is Japanese. You'll also usually see Pac-Man. Japanese. Snake. Japanese.

Really, was there anything like Mario before Mario released? Pac-Man? Zelda? Sure, there were plenty of games like Zelda. The majority of which were made by Square. Japanese.

America does not come close to Japan.

EDIT: I will also throw this in:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles#Video_game_and_handheld_consoles

You have to go down to 11th place to find a non-Japanese console, and this console was released just four years ago. Then another in 12th, then 14th, then another at 22nd, and after that, we're below 10 million sales. That's right, everything from 1st-10th, 13th, and 15th-21st place was made in Japan.

(Former) Lead Moderator and (Eternal) VGC Detective

Plus only Japanese games can sells well everywhere even US. But only one of non japanese game able to sold more than 1 million in Japan (Crash Bandicoot)

Here are top 20 best selling franchise (Wiki)

Mario - Jpn
Pokemon - Jpn
Tetris - Russia
Sims - USA

How dare you list Overlord on the UK's list!

Overlord is a Dutch product. If at all Codemasters has done it more harm than good.

Whoops, hear me out:

Overlord (known as Supremacy: Your Will Be Done in Europe) -1990 strategy video game for the NES, developed by British developer Probe Software. (THis was a really influential strategy game actually, and deserves to be on there for the case for the UK.

Overlord (1994 video game), a World War II flight simulator for the Amiga and PC by Rowan Software (British again)

Overlord (2007 video game), an action/adventure game for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 developed by Triumph Studios (Netherlands), only published by Codemasters

The Wii and DS Overlord spin-off games were developed by Climax group (another UK developer).

You can understand why I got a bit confused!! But thanks for pointing that out, I'll remove it from the OP.

I think the problem is that most people aren't reading the title correctly.  They see gaming and think "only" consoles.  Many of which weren't around for the Atari and pre-Atari so they think gaming = japan (which is understandable if you're young).  You have to look at the whole body of work... not just the last 5, 10, 20 years... keep going.  And look at every type of "video" gaming.

What about PC/Mac gaming?  What about arcade gaming?  even console and handheld gaming.  None of it started in japan.

What about almost every gaming genre we have today?  FPS, RTS, RPG, MMO games, Platformer, Adventure, Sports, Sim games, Race & Flight sims, etc.... Also didn't start in japan.

A lot of young gamers like to referrence the "video game crash" and how thank god Japan saved us all from doom and gloom.  You obviously didn't live during those times because PC gaming exploded when the console crash happened.  PC developers flurished with ideas, creating all the genres that modern day gamers enjoy today.  Seeing as how almost every innovation that console gaming gets each new generation has come from PC gaming, I can't see how anyone would say Japan has contibuted the most.

Digital Distribution.... again, not japanese.

Cloud computing (the eventual future of gaming)... also not japanese.

I don't see how creating almost everything associated with "gaming" could put you in 2nd place.

And for those that love to post sales, you're forgetting that PC sales aren't tracked here, Mac gaming sales aren't tracked, nor are digital distribution sites like Steam, Impulse, Direct2Drive, iTunes (iPhone/iTunes gaming), etc.  PC/Mac gaming is ruled by US/Canada & Europe but weren't not seeing how much of an impact they truly have on overall game sales.   Not that sales are a big deal anyway.  Sales do not = contribution to gaming history (imo at least).  Looking Glass Studios is one of the biggest contributors to gaming imho, and all of their games sold like poo.

Now has Japan contibuted a lot to gaming?  Of course!  They've come up with great games and great mascots that millions of people love.  But imo, they're definitaly second.  UK third, Canada fourth, France & German & south Korea have also contributed a lot so they get honorable mention.

You make a good case for the USA, but I don't think you give Japan enough credit. When you say that the USA gave us the platformer, for example, are you talking about games such as Frogs or Space Panic? Calling them the first platformers is like calling dinosaurs the first birds. Donkey Kong was far more influential in establishing the genre and Super Mario Bros was obviously the most iconic, seminal piece in the genre. I think you'd have a point if it were the case that without Frogs or Space Panic we wouldn't have had Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. I don't believe that that is true, however.

Win.  I also think the U.S. should get first, but I understand Japan's contribution and they are a close second imo.

it even goes beyond that my friend. Sorry but the Sales = contrubution argument is very weak or you don't see what the thread is about. Of course games like Mario and Zelda and GT are huge sellers when you got Nintendo and Sony dominating the console market for more than 20 years and bundling the hell out of Mario and GT.

Most if not all the technologies behind gaming (which the game industry being built on now) are US driven every single CPU GPU and Motherboard in almost every mainstream Japanese console is created and developed originally by US minds. Japan give us a lot of great games that's true, but guys like Miyamoto wouldn't even been able to make everything they wanted without the US companies driving the industry and the technology forward, companies like IBM, Intel, AMD, ATI and Nvidia to name a few.

I'll go as far as saying if it weren't for the US I would say that gaming (and a lot of other industries) would probably be 20 years behind by now.

The last thing I'll say is think about any invention you think came from Japan then look it up and do your research 9 times out of 10 you'll find it's based on a US Idea, Invention, Creation.
