Forums - Sony - In Game Ads...After you already bought and paid for the game

No, I want to see Modern Warfare 2.

Imagine you just die. Then a Allstate commercial comes on and says you should have bought life insurance

i dont mind some ads but the ones that were in wipeout certainly wouldnt be ok. if you have ads during loading times...it shouldnt increase the load times. magically fit them in or fuck off.

You are pretty late, they removed these already.

Just because they pulled it doesn't mean it won't happen again.  It sets a bad precedent for the future.

Edit:  Not really a precedent I guess:  "The ads were put into the game by a company called Double Fusion, and the company has claimed that we can expect more ads coming to a "handful" of PlayStation Network titles in the future."

LOL, imagine you're playing Flower, and suddenly a billboard pops up

Well first off, i dont own the game in question. But if the in game ads had been there to start with, there wouldnt be an issue since you wouldnt have a loading time to compare with. You'd just think all was good in the world.

But as i said, dont own the game or saw the ads. Now if the loading time felt like a kick in the nuts long compared to any other game out there, id say remove them, bad choice and nothing is worth ruining the game experience. But this time around it just seems as sony came up with the idea a tad too late, and people had already got accustom to how the game worked.

So my guess is... people of the internet have to much time on their hands to blow this up into something huge. In-game ads ruined my life.. geez!

Behold the power of the digital commons!

I've done a little research on this, and I can tell you that the advertisers have been trying to commercialize and ad-ify games from the very beginning. And they have always failed, because (1) gaming is interactive, and ads disrupt the gaming experience, and (2) gamers today are highly mobilized thanks to the Web. Disrespect the commons, and you will face the merciless wrath of the AGM (Angry Gaming Mob).

This isn't the bash the ad people - they're just getting a message out, nothing wrong with that. But there's a right way and a wrong way to do this. For all of Home's problems and limitations, Sony got this right -- keep the ads low-key, and build the advertising into a consumer experience. There will always be some level of advertising in games, but the trick is to manage it at sustainable levels that never, ever impede the game-play or experience (MGS4 does this very nicely).

Did you read the article?  The game came out free of ads.  They added them via patch/update AFTER you bought the game.  Not only that but they put video ads on the loading screen and dramatically increased the loading time with it.

It's down now, quit moaning about it and if it keeps psn free, it's worth the extra seconds.

They then removed those offensive ads...

Anyway, if they are non intrusive, why not? Just take Project Gotham Racing. As you go round the tracks, there are obviously billboards, because they are real life locations, so having something MadCatz on them kind of makes sense, makes more money for the publisher and doesn't really hurt us. Same with most sports with advertising hoardings around the side, it makes sense to have adverts on there, especially if they are the right ones, because it makes it that bit more immersive. In PES 2010's Champions League mode, they have the correct adverts behind the goal, so it looks just right when you score that goal and see the Sony Bravia board behind it, because that's what it would look like if you were watching it on TV.

On the other hand, in something like Ratchet, if they had any proper ads, apart from the J & D billboards and the funny ads, it would just not feel right

I haven't played Burnout Paradise but I hear it does billboards, maybe wipeout should do them but I suppose with how fast the ships go, it's unlikely you'll see them properly...maybe when it's doing the "pre-race attraction reel...?"
