Forums - Nintendo - No price cut for the Wii and Wii's successor is in progress said Iwata

That's probably true about the preemptive strike, and they did delay it a little, but I think more of their titles for this year should have been Wii M+ focussed, to give it a proper launch. All we have now is four big sports games (two of which are tennis), a couple of other minor titles, and some more interesting titles on the distant horizon (Red Steel 2, Zelda Wii, No More Heroes 2?). The only really major thing there is Wii Sports Resort, and that may not be able to keep people excited about the promise of Wii M+.

If Wii Motion Plus is to be the next platform in itself, as I think Nintendo do want it to be, they need to treat it like one.

Of course, they still hold the advantage for a long time before Natal and SonyMo come out, but I want them to capitalize on it!

I predict an NES-colored Wii bundled with New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the holidays. ;)

Ok not really, but that would be major cool.

I think a red Wii bundled with NSMB Wii would sell a ton this holiday. Besides it would be better to release an NES-colored Wii next year since it'll be the 25th anniversary.

I predict that we'll see a cut for the start of their next fiscal year, so around April 2010 or so. The Wii successor thing has probably actually been in development since early 2007, at the latest, so it comes as no surprise. I would like to say that plays into my Holiday 2011 prediction for their next console, but it's just talk at this point.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nintendo already saw XB360 price cut didn't hurt Wii and it's reasonable PS3 cut won't either.
This and also it knows MS has a few possible cuts left, and having already seen they don't even scratch Wii, it will use them in the fight with Sony for 2nd place, while Sony can only fight for 2nd place now, so it's not a close danger by any means.
So no need for Nintendo to worry next Xmas, it can still maximize profit margin, watching Sony and MS stabbing each other and, just in case, plan price cuts and other moves for Xmas 2010 if from the battle for 2nd place a clear winner emerges strong enough to cause concern. But should the winner in weekly sales be Sony, Nintendo can even cut price before Xmas 2011, as PS3 should fill the gap with XB360 and become 2nd before even thinking to start having a very remote chance to aim higher.
And in the quite likely case the fight for 2nd place ends in a tie, even less reasons for Ninty to worry, it would just lose most chances of reaching 50%, but its first place would be consolidated, a cut would be eventually needed very later, but with no reason at all to hurry.

Why do you think Nintendo will cut the price just because the competition does? You may have noticed all the other price cuts they've had without the Wii getting one. Sounds like thinking from two years ago, to be honest.

It's not news that they're working on Wii's successor. No big company ever stops designing new products - you can bet that each of the big three have been working on their next consoles since the current ones launched. Plans for them change often, but preliminary work would have started very shortly after Wii, PS3, and 360 launched, respectively.

Yeah but if PS360 rise their sales while the Wii's are dropping, they won't stay there doing nothing.

I'm not sure Sony is currently working on a PS4, but the news here is that Nintendo affirms publicly they are working on their next console instead of keeping it secret as usual.

Nintendo regularly say they're working on the next console because they're always working on the next console (Iwata has said this in earlier interviews). That's why nobody has taken this as much of a shock.

New colors would help increase sales for the Wii.

i really don't care. i already have my Wii!!!

MY ZELDA COLLECTION

How the hell is 3.38M bad for Animal Crossing? Maybe if they had spent more than a month making the game instead of giving us basically a port of the N64 Animal Crossing game with a few minor additions might have helped!!

Wii Music almost at 3 million and Animal Crossing passing 3 million is disappointing to Iwata?...was he expecting WiiFit/Mario Kart like sales?...if so, maybe it´s one of the (rare?) cases of Nintendo misreading their blue ocean market.

The problem with Wii Music was that it was too experimental. They wanted to do something with UGC, but they put it into a much too important game. They should have focused on the content (ie. more songs, and not just old free songs...)

I agree, the content offered was the biggest shortcoming of the game. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Yankee Doodle are useful for instructional purposes, but they aren't going to set anybody's heart ablaze. Even the few pop songs on the disc were bland old hits from the 80s.

To add to Khuutra's license-free Nintendo songs, they could have included more classical compositions without having to pay a license fee. Licensed music could have been added to a DLC store to recoup costs.

Normally, Nintendo's gameplay over content focus is well-founded, but you just can't make a music game without offering some killer content these days.

I don't even think it's that. I think Nintendo merely got it wrong thinking the rhythm genre wasn't being catered to. Wii Music was wholly unnecessary when Rock Band and Guitar Hero gave the beginner gamer, the traditionalist gamer, the gamer looking for a challenge, and the local multiplayer crowd precisely what they wanted; the feeling they were participating in a band and/or playing an instrument. Once you've got legitimate fake instruments in your hands, going to air guitar is a step backwards. I will admit it didn't help matters any that Wii Music's soundtrack absolutely blew chunks though.
