Forums - Sales - What if LIVE was totally free?

Microsoft doesn't charge you for your internet service. This is why they also don't charge you for Xbox Live Silver. Xbox Live Gold is a subscription, including short weekly Microsoft shows, online playability, Avatar games and much, much, more.

360 games don't even use MS servers as hosts. They are using P2P for online gaming just like many PC games so basically they are using your own console as server while gaming. MS doesn't even have dedicated hosts for online play so basically MS charges for something which cost them almost nothing at all.

Microsoft's gaming division would lose a hefty chunk of recurring revenue from gold memberships.

Probably not as bad as you'd think now that ads will be on the dashboards.

How does that effect money from gold membership accounts?

Instead of relying on gold membership accounts, ads could possibly be sought at as a way for MS to ween off the reliance of gold members as their major source of revenue for online.  I figured that was self-explanatory

You missed my point.  Gold Accounts and Ads are unrelated revenue streams.  One is not related to the other.  If Microsoft were to make Gold free then they would lose the same amount of money irregardless of the existence of Ads.

You can say that Ads will offset the money lost from switching Gold from paid to free, but you're still losing the full amount of money from it as you're going from Gold+Ads to just Ads (not Gold to Ads).

My original statement stands regardless of the effect of Ads.

Then it would stand a chance at being as good as PSN.

Online gaming isnt all Xbox Live offers dude. It's also a community.

Why do people say that it wouldn't stand a chance of being as good as PSN. PSN wouldn't be where it is today without he Xbox Live blue print. They will continue to rip off Xbox Live for many years. Still lacking as many dedicated users as Live.

I would certainly play a lot more With X360 in online. It is annoying that even after you buy a game you must pay 10€ per month to play it online. I am used to play online games free with PC and now with PS3. And now it has a big effect to my decision which one of multiplat version I buy when I buy game that is in both HD consoles. If the games are otherwise similar I buy PS3 version from now on.

Actually, MS provides the server infrastructure for P2P matchmaking.  There are master servers that contain a list of all clients looking for matches and then provide the means to connect them.  MS provides this for developers.  MS also provides the TrueSkill ranking system to help with the P2P matchmaking aspect.

actually i was merely poking fun at the thread title using Tottaly instead of Completley, imo, Completley would have fitted the title much better, lol

atm, i'd say its easily the best online out there, but PSN is improving imo, so maybe if PSN keeps getting better, then i would complain about the price, till then, i dont mind paying £5 a month.
