Instead of relying on gold membership accounts, ads could possibly be sought at as a way for MS to ween off the reliance of gold members as their major source of revenue for online.  I figured that was self-explanatory

You missed my point.  Gold Accounts and Ads are unrelated revenue streams.  One is not related to the other.  If Microsoft were to make Gold free then they would lose the same amount of money irregardless of the existence of Ads.

You can say that Ads will offset the money lost from switching Gold from paid to free, but you're still losing the full amount of money from it as you're going from Gold+Ads to just Ads (not Gold to Ads).

My original statement stands regardless of the effect of Ads.
