Sony continues to make profits on PS2 hardware and software which helps offset the losses Sony has made on PS3 hardware. It would be a bad move by Sony to give up the PS2 which has sold over 140 million systems in 9 years. Consumer backlash is something no company wants to endure.

Like most people are saying this would be better for the 360 or Wii than the PS3, so they need to keep it going. Until at least the PS3 is in the $200-250 range which wont be until next holiday season, or they add backwards compatability and advertise on the box that the PS3 does this now.
