Iwata sez: It's unfair to the early adopters.

Even though that's probably not their reason, it is true.

No it's not. Price is also determined by time. If you want to get the game now, you ahve to pay full price. If you can wait for a year, the value isn't the same anymore and it is fine to buy it for less money. That's really basic economics. @Killergran: Player's Choice existed during the GC era. Those games had silver covers instead of black ones. I thought it existed also during the N64 era in some form, but I'm not sure about that.

It exsisted in the N64 era and even in the SNES era. Though, only Europe got that silver cover business. The US got Yellow banners...

Anywho, Nintendo has no reason to use the Player's Choice program. I mean, for Sony and Microsoft, they have to. While the difference between new games on the HD systems and Wii are about $10, that extra $10 is hard for people to swallow. Not to mention it helps drive up system sales. Nintendo needed this with previous systems. Now, people are still buying Wii Fit like crazy and there has been no price drop. If people buy that many units of Wii Fit for about $90, why are they gonna lower prices for their other games at $50? Nintendo's just raking in the money.

Mr. Iwata said that early buyers would be pissed if the game they bought had a price drop.

While they don't have Player's Choice, the price is dropping on some of their titles.

SMG is $40, not $50 for example.

Nintendo hasn't dropped the price, just some retailers.

Of course. I don't think many publishers want to lower the price of their games, but the retailers due it to push stock or bring people into the store.

I'm sure the player's choice line will come up within 2 years as older software like Mario Galaxy and Smash Bros. stop selling.

Why would SSBB stop selling?  It's the most popular fighting game around.  Heck, it is still several times more popular than anything else.  Plus, they is little competition on Wii.  If anything, the new Mario, Zelda and possibly other games featuring charcters from SSBB will help ensure that SSBB continues to sell for years to come.

i really can't buy this "it'll make the early adopters mad" excuse. it's not just in video games, but in pretty much all electronics, movies, music cd's, books, appliences, cars, ect if you wait to buy something, you can get it cheaper later. the early adopters know that the thing their buying is gonna be cheaper a few years from now. they choose to pay the higher price to have it now. i don't get how anybody could get mad over this.

though probably the only reason he's using this excuse is because he of course doesn't want to say "sucks to be you kid. our stuff's still flying off the shelves. the prices ain't going down for a LONG time!"

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=76669&page=1

Actually, the early adopters were mad over the first iPhone price drop, and I remember people being pretty upset on these forums about the first PS3 price drop. I wouldn't want to drop the price on my hardware for at least 1 year if not slightly longer. Now, if he says that again it is surely for the reasons you described

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

While I still like the formalized Player's Choice catelogues, I think one of the main reasons that no platform is actively pushing these catelogues like they used to is that they're not that necessary anymore ...

From my understanding, Nintendo already has a licencing fee structure which scales according to the price of the game meaning that publishers have the choice to discount their game at any time. As a result, most publishers readily reduce the price of their games when they become "old" and their sales fall to keep the game on store shelves longer.

I always wondered if Nintendo licensing was a flat fee or some kind of scale. I figured it was probably flat because (unless I'm mistaken) Nintendo prints all the Wii discs and DS carts, charging the publisher for the work.

Was Hotel Dusk $20 on its first printing? Because the reprint with the ugly orange banner is the closest thing I've seen to a Player's Choice line so far.

Prices drop, big deal. You accept the full responsibility when you buy something. If you want to buy it cheaper then wait for it to go down or buy it used. People wanted to trade in their HD DVDs when they lost the war, but they chose to buy them so it's their loss. The same should apply to video game price cuts.
