08/1/09 OPINION : FGNOnline GIVES IT'S TAKE ON SEGA SAMMY'S CURRENT FINANCIAL SITUATION

SEGA SAMMY is teetering on the edge of financial collapse, they are currently not any position to field a consumer electronics product, whether a console or a handheld. They are on the verge of 3 straight years of substantial losses.

The vast majority of the losses stem from the company's consumer division. If the bleeding doesn't stop then SAMMY will be left with no other option but to offload SEGA.

The fact of the matter is that the pure play publishing business of SEGA never really got of the ground. SEGA has been struggling ever since they entered the field in 2001.

In the opinion of this editor the best thing that can happen now is for SAMMY to sell SEGA to a consumer electronics giant such as SAMSUNG or Panasonic, or maybe even Apple. If any of these three want in on the living room battle then purchasing SEGA is their best bet. It is a far safer risk than starting from the bottom and building their own brand.

From SEGA's perpective they need the financial clout to combat the deep pockets of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.

What about Sony

Zach Morris again.

Doesn't nintendo have something to the tune of 18 billion dollers in reserve? IMO Nintendo would do well to buy sega just to get access to their impressive list of IPs.

Apple + Sega = iPlay in 2011.

They should sell to Sony. Sony needs another good studio.

This guy and his SEGA articles again...

I don't think Sega is "on the edge of financial collapse".

I just scanned through their balance sheet and I can't see any mention of debt, and they have $1 billion in cash reserves.

Is there are any justification in their analysis?

EDIT- ok I found the debt, it's around $500 million... still doesn't look like they're about to collapse.

So why would they buy SEGA? And they don't need any more good studios apart from for RPGs. They have every other genre covered

Anyway, Nintendo is certainly the most plausible out of the big 3. They have to do something with those piles of cash they have sitting around. The only SEGA game I have bought this gen is Empire Total War, which was made by the Creative Assembly, who they aquired recently

Well Sony should at least buy rights to Valkaria Chronicles and maybe the team behind it.
