Forums - Gaming - Microsoft: Next generation won't be definided by hardware....

Software and services are more important.

"The 'next generation' will be defined by software and services, not hardware. It's less about competing with Sony and Nintendo, and more about breaking down the barriers to the industry... In the past we would always get this question, 'Hey, there's a new console launch every five years and you're coming up on that time for Xbox, right?' That's the old treadmill way of thinking. Before you had things that were very obvious, from a hardware standpoint--pushing more pixels, the move from 2-D to 3-D, 3-D to HD, etc. We got a very powerful piece of hardware in Xbox 360. I am confident that we have more headroom available, in terms of developers and creators figuring out how to get more out of the system."

Mmmhhh Microsoft jumping into the "10 years plan" boat

Sounds good. Now let's see some of this "software" of which you speak.

Software was important this gen and every gen.

"Software and services"... Some kind of game streaming service coming from Microsoft, for next gen?

Also-"not about competing with Sony and Nintendo". Looks like they're taking even more lessons from Nintendo. "Breaking down barriers"... Heard all this, starting in 2004 with DS and becoming more pronounced in 2006 with Wii, probably around the time MS were saying the Wii was the ideal second console for 360 users, or that Bill Gates claimed Nintendo would be a niche player.

Truthfully, I kind of like the old industry thinking of five or six years between launches.

I think they do need to add better graphics. They're gonna start looking shitty in 2 or 3 years from now.

Follow the leader...

we need more software and less services , not vice versa.

MS has always said, "10 years and 1 day" plan....   lol

Nintendo found success by focusing on gameplay, and less on hardware power.
